I haven’t heard much mention of K-pop star Psy since 2012, when his ‘Gangnam Style’ video racked up billions of views on YouTube and turned the song into an international hit.
Psy has continued recording since then, but without another breakthrough hit. He released his seventh and eighth studio albums in 2015 and 2017.
Now he’s back with his ninth, appropriately titled Psy 9th, and might be poised for another worldwide moment.
The video for lead-off single ‘That That’ has already amassed 136 million views, thanks in part to the inclusion of SUGA from BTS (a band that hadn’t even formed when ‘Gangnam Style’ came out).
‘That That’ isn’t as instantly catchy as ‘Gangnam Style,’ but it’s in the same neighborhood. It also allows Psy to officially declare “pandemic’s over,” so that’s good news.
Note: SUGA’s first utterance, which comes about halfway through the song, sounds uncomfortably like the n-word. This often happens in K-pop songs, because the Korean word for “you” is pronounced “ne-ga” or “ni-ga.”
