I’ve always ranked The Beatles’ Let It Be in the lower half of their albums. That’s not saying too much, given the excellence of everything they released, but still, it’s never been a favorite.
I found a whole new appreciation for the album, however, after watching Peter Jackson’s Get Back mini-series, which documented the creation of Let It Be in fascinating detail. Now when I listen to it, I can picture the laughs, the fights, the creative chemistry that made The Beatles work.
That said, the docuseries also points out plenty of missed opportunities on the finished album. Take today’s SOTD, ‘Dig It,’ which offers up just under a minute of a 15-minute jam. Get Back features more than four minutes of the piece, including vocals by 6-year-old Heather, Paul’s adopted daughter.
I don’t think the album would have benefitted from the 15-minute version, but it surely could have run another minute or two.

I haven’t revisited this album since watching the documentary, so thank you for the reminder that I really need to do so.
One of the coolest parts of the documentary was watching multiple takes on a song and then the caption coming on the screen that “this version appeared on the album Let it Be.” We played a number of those songs from the album after and I kinda felt as though I was now an insider with special access to the recording sessions of the greatest rock band of all time.
