Rapper Latto comes in at #14 on this week’s Billboard Hot 100 with the song ‘Big Energy.’ The song was recently remixed as a collaboration with Mariah Carey, whose ‘Fantasy’ uses the same Tom Tom Club sample, so it might find its way into the top ten soon.
I didn’t think I’d ever heard of Latto, until I realized she shortened her name from the controversial Mulatto. I’m passingly familiar with her under that moniker, thanks to my daughter.
Latto is one of a crop of sexually frank female rappers who have stormed onto the scene in recent years. It’s fascinating to see women staking out ground in the same raunchy arena that male rappers have occupied for decades.
This is a catchy, disco-infused track that owes almost all of its success to that Tom Tom Club ‘Genius of Love‘ sample.

Catchy, but, while I may sound like Tipper Gore, I am concerned with young kids being exposed to these type of sexually explicit lyrics (with the n word dropped in for good measure).
Yeah, and meanwhile we have the legislature passing laws to prevent teachers from discussing sexuality with the same kids listening to this song in their headphones.
I do think it’s a small sign of progress that after decades of equally explicit songs by male rappers that portray women as objects (or worse), the women are now given speaking roles in this genre.
