Elton John and Dua Lipa claim the 13th spot on this week’s Billboard Hot 100, with ‘Cold Heart (PNAU Remix),’ PNAU being the Australian electronic group responsible for the track.
Earlier in the year, this song returned Elton John Billboard’s Top Ten for the first time since 1997’s Princess Di-themed rewrite of ‘Candle in the Wind.’ However, this one feels like it should have an asterisk, because John’s portions of the song are culled from older recordings.
The songs in question are ‘Rocket Man,’ the 1989 Top 20 hit ‘Sacrifice,’ and 1985’s ‘Kiss the Bride,’ a single from the Too Low For Zero album. Initially, the plan was to use John’s original vocals from all three tracks, but then Dua Lipa was brought in to sing the ‘Rocket Man’ part to change things up.
This is a neat experiment that works as both a mash-up and a standalone song. I’d be curious to hear more of these from other classic artists.
(Oh)
(You’re my cold heart)
(Oh)
[Verse: Elton John]
It’s a human sign
When things go wrong
When the scent of her lingers
And temptation’s strong
[Pre-Chorus: Elton John]
Cold, cold heart
Hardened by you (Oh)
Some things lookin’ better, baby
Just passin’ through (No, no, no, no, no)
[Chorus: Dua Lipa]
And I think it’s gonna be a long, long time
‘Til touchdown brings me ’round again to find
I’m not the man they think I am at home
Oh no, no, no
And this is what I should have said
Well, I thought it, but I kept it hid
[Pre-Chorus: Elton John]
Cold, cold heart
Hardened by you (Oh)
Some things lookin’ better, baby
Just passin’ through (No, no, no, no, no)
[Chorus: Dua Lipa]
And I think it’s gonna be a long, long time
‘Til touchdown brings me ’round again to find
I’m not the man they think I am at home
Oh no, no, no (No, no, no, no, no)
And this is what I should have said
Well, I thought it, but I kept it hid
[Pre-Chorus: Elton John]
Cold, cold heart (Oh)
Hardened by you
Some things lookin’ better, baby (Oh)
Just passin’ through (No, no, no, no, no)
[Chorus: Dua Lipa]
And I think it’s gonna be a long, long time
‘Til touchdown brings me ’round again to find
I’m not the man they think I am at home
Oh no, no, no (No, no, no, no, no)
And this is what I should have said (And I think it’s gonna be a long, long time)
(‘Til touchdown brings me ’round again to find)
Well, I thought it, but I kept it hid (I’m not the man they think I am at home)
(Oh, no, no, no)
(No, no, no, no, no)
[Outro]
Shoorah (Oh)
Shoorah
Shoorah (Oh)
Shoorah
(No, no, no, no, no)
Yeah, I’ve heard this a number of times, often in restaurants. It took me awhile to figure out the line from “Kiss the Bride.” Good stuff though.
