In the #4 spot on the latest Billboard Hot 100, we have ‘abcdefu’ by 17-year-old singer-songwriter Gayle. This catchy kiss-off track has spent 17 weeks on the chart and peaked at #3 before sliding back a spot.
Many songs on the Hot 100 these days owe their popularity to TikTok. This one owes its very existence to the social platform. Gayle asked her TikTok followers for song ideas and liked the suggestion from one to write a song that included the alphabet. I wonder if that fan is trying to get a cut of the profits.
I like this song. It shares a sound and sensibility with some tracks on Olivia Rodrigo’s great debut album. Indeed, Rodrigo reportedly DM’s Gayle to congratulate her on the song’s success. It’s exciting to see a crop of young, talented women blowing up the charts.
Fuck you and your mom and your sister and your job
And your broke-ass car and that shit you call art
Fuck you and your friends that I’ll never see again
Everybody but your dog, you can all fuck off
[Verse 1]
I swear I meant to mean the best when it ended
Even tried to bite my tongue when you start shit
Now you’re textin’ all my friends asking questions
They never even liked you in the first place
Dated a girl that I hate for the attention
She only made it two days, what a connection
It’s like you’d do anythin’ for my affection
You’re goin’ all about it in the worst ways
[Pre-Chorus]
I was into you, but I’m ovеr it now
And I was tryna be nice
But nothing’s getting through, so lеt me spell it out
[Chorus]
A-B-C-D-E, F you
And your mom and your sister and your job
And your broke-ass car and that shit you call art
Fuck you and your friends that I’ll never see again
Everybody but your dog, you can all fuck off
[Post-Chorus]
Na-na-na-na, na-na-na-na
A-B-C-D-E, F you
[Verse 2]
You said you just needed space and so I gave it
When I had nothin’ to say, you couldn’t take it
Told everyone I’m a bitch, so I became it
Always had to put yourself above me
[Pre-Chorus]
I was into you, but I’m over it now
And I was tryna be nice
But nothing’s getting through, so let me spell it out
[Chorus]
A-B-C-D-E, F you
And your mom and your sister and your job
And your craigslist couch and the way your voice sounds
Fuck you and your friends that I’ll never see again
Everybody but your dog, you can all fuck off
[Post-Chorus]
Na-na-na-na, na-na-na-na
A-B-C-D-E, F off (F off)
Na-na-na-na, na-na-na-na
A-B-C-D-E, F you
[Outro]
And your mom and your sister and your job
And your broke-ass car and that shit you call art
Fuck you and your friends that I’ll never see again
Everybody but your dog, you can all fuck off
Definitely hear the Olivia Rodrigo influence, which, in turn, includes the influence of Taylor Swift.
