After a solid month of movie posts, I’m shifting back to my primary focus on music. I will have more film-related content this year, including planned deep dives into a few directors’ filmographies, but that will come later. For now, it’s time for some tunes!
And what better way to start than with another installment of “What the Kids are Listening To?” I last dipped into the Billboard Hot 100 the week of November 14, 2021, and over the next two weeks we’ll see what songs are topping the list right now.
We have repeats in the #1 and #2 spot.
Glass Animals’ TikTok-fueled ‘Heat Waves’ was at #10 back in November, but has climbed to #1 since. It took the song 42 weeks to reach the top 10 — a record — and 59 weeks to reach the top spot — also a record. Good things come to those who wait.
At #2 is ‘Stay’ by The Kid LAROI and Justin Bieber, which was also at #2 back in November. Since then it has reached the top spot and dropped down a few slots before settling back here.
Our first new entry belongs to Kodak Black, sitting at #3 with ‘Super Gremlin.’ As often happens with rap songs on the Hot 100, I don’t get the appeal of this one. Kodak’s mumbling delivery does nothing for me, and the song is unremarkable both lyrically and musically.
