Song of the Day #4,891: ‘Heat Waves’ – Glass Animals

English electropop group Glass Animals lands at #10 on Billboard’s Hot 100 with ‘Heat Waves,’ a beat-heavy but melancholy tune. ‘Heat Waves’ broke a Billboard record for the longest climb to the top ten, finally cracking the barrier in its 42nd week.

Like so many songs these days, this one owes its success to TikTok, and millions of views of people mournfully lip-syncing the chorus while pining for an absent loved one. Almost every song in the current top ten has featured prominently in a TikTok trend.

I don’t think this is a bad development, on the whole. TikTok exposes viewers to a diverse lineup of artists, which is good for the charts. How else would you have Walker Hayes, Glass Animals and The Kid LAROI sharing space in the top ten?

Crucially, the song snippets on TikTok don’t count as streams for Billboard’s purposes. But they send people to YouTube, Spotify or Amazon to track down the source material. So you basically have the world’s most powerful free advertising engine in the hands of a bunch of taste-making 19-year-olds. It beats payola.

[Intro]
(Last night, all I think about is you
Don’t stop, baby, you can walk through
Don’t want, baby, think about you
You know that I’m never gonna lose)
Road shimmer wigglin’ the vision
Heat, heat waves, I’m swimmin’ in a mirror
Road shimmer wigglin’ the vision
Heat, heat waves, I’m swimmin’ in a—

[Chorus]
Sometimes, all I think about is you
Late nights in the middle of June
Heat waves been fakin’ me out
Can’t make you happier now
Sometimes, all I think about is you
Late nights in the middle of June
Heat waves been fakin’ me out
Can’t make you happier now

[Verse 1]
Usually I put somethin’ on TV
So we never think about you and me
But today I see our reflections clearly
In Hollywood, layin’ on the screen
You just need a better life than this
You need somethin’ I can never give
Fake water all across the road
It’s gone now, the night has come, but

[Chorus]
Sometimes all I think about is you
Late nights in the middle of June
Heat waves been fakin’ me out
Can’t make you happier now

[Verse 2]
You can’t fight it, you can’t breathe
You say somethin’ so lovin’, but
Now I gotta let you go
You’ll be better off in someone new
I don’t wanna be alone
You know it hurts me too
You look so broken when you cry
One more and then I’ll say goodbye

[Chorus]
Sometimes, all I think about is you
Late nights in the middle of June
Heat waves been fakin’ me out
Can’t make you happier now
Sometimes, all I think about is you
Late nights in the middle of June
Heat waves been fakin’ me out
Can’t make you happier now

[Bridge]
I just wonder what you’re dreamin’ of
When you sleep and smile so comfortable
I just wish that I could give you that
That look that’s perfectly un-sad
Sometimes, all I think about is you
Late nights in the middle of June
Heat waves been fakin’ me out
Heat waves been fakin’ me out

[Chorus]
Sometimes, all I think about is you
Late nights in the middle of June
Heat waves been fakin’ me out
Can’t make you happier now
Sometimes, all I think about is you
Late nights in the middle of June
Heat waves been fakin’ me out
Can’t make you happier now

[Outro]
Road shimmer wigglin’ the vision
Heat, heat waves, I’m swimmin’ in a mirror
Road shimmer wigglin’ the vision
Heat, heat waves, I’m swimmin’ in a mirror

  1. Dana Gallup says:

It would be helpful to a song’s chart success if TikTok would provide a link where you could then download the full song. Of course, that would take you away from the platform, which TikTok doesn’t want. They want you scrolling through TikToks as long as possible.
