It seems like ages ago that Olivia Rodrigo blew up the charts with her debut album, Sour, and its record-breaking lead-off singles.
‘Good 4 U,’ the second track released before the album dropped, debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and sits at #9 six months later. This blunt kiss-off track (which cribs enough from Paramore’s ‘Misery Business’ to earn that crew songwriting credit) hit an even bigger nerve than Rodrigo’s powerful ‘Drivers License.’
Rodrigo broke a host of Billboard records with this album, including becoming the first artist ever to place three songs from a debut album in the Top 10. She is clearly a creative force.
And yet, in these crazy, short attention span times, Rodrigo feels like she’s out of the conversation, pop culture-wise. I’m sure that will change as soon as she releases another video or surprises with a new song.
But even a low profile can keep you at #9 on the Hot 100 when you have as strong a head start as Rodrigo.
Well, good for you, I guess you moved on really easily
You found a new girl and it only took a couple weeks
Remember when you said that you wanted to give me the world?
(World)
And good for you, I guess that you’ve been workin’ on yourself
I guess that therapist I found for you, she really helped
Now you can be a better man for your brand new girl (Girl)
[Chorus]
Well, good for you
You look happy and healthy, not me
If you ever cared to ask
Good for you
You’re doin’ great out there without me, baby
God, I wish that I could do that
I’ve lost my mind, I’ve spent the night
Cryin’ on the floor of my bathroom
But you’re so unaffected, I really don’t get it
But I guess good for you
[Verse 2]
Well, good for you, I guess you’re gettin’ everything you want (Ah)
You bought a new car and your career’s really takin’ off (Ah)
It’s like we never even happened
Baby, what the fuck is up with that? (Ah)
And good for you, it’s like you never even met me
Remember when you swore to God I was the only
Person who ever got you? Well, screw that, and screw you
You will never have to hurt the way you know that I do
[Chorus]
Well, good for you
You look happy and healthy, not me
If you ever cared to ask
Good for you
You’re doin’ great out there without me, baby
God, I wish that I could do that
I’ve lost my mind, I’ve spent the night
Cryin’ on the floor of my bathroom
But you’re so unaffected, I really don’t get it
But I guess good for you
[Break]
(Ah-ah-ah-ah)
(Ah-ah-ah-ah)
[Bridge]
Maybe I’m too emotional
But your apathy’s like a wound in salt
Maybe I’m too emotional
Or maybe you never cared at all
Maybe I’m too emotional
Your apathy is like a wound in salt
Maybe I’m too emotional
Or maybe you never cared at all
[Chorus]
Well, good for you
You look happy and healthy, not me
If you ever cared to ask
Good for you
You’re doin’ great out there without me, baby
Like a damn sociopath
I’ve lost my mind, I’ve spent the night
Cryin’ on the floor of my bathroom
But you’re so unaffected, I really don’t get it
But I guess good for you
[Outro]
Well, good for you, I guess you moved on really easily
It seems like voluntarily giving songwriting credit has become the path of least resistance rather than becoming embroiled in lawsuits. Here is an interesting article about the Paramore credit on “Good 4 U,” which also mentions credit given to Taylor Swift, and Elvis Costello declining to pursue credit despite a fairly obvious lift of the guitar riff from “Pump it Up” on Rodrigo’s “Brutal.”
