Song of the Day #4,974: ‘There Are Worse Games To Play’ – James Newton Howard

The newly 16-year-old Fiona continues sharing her favorite orchestral pieces…

“Being one of the longest tracks I listen to, I thought this one deserved some recognition.

James Newton Howard wraps up the entirety of the Hunger Games movie franchise with this astonishing 10-minute piece. While watching the final scene of Mockingjay Pt. 2, you hear this beautiful melody along with great vocals from none other than Jennifer Lawrence herself.

Deep in the meadow, under the willow
A bed of grass, a soft green pillow
Lay down your head, and close your sleepy eyes
And when again they open, the sun will rise

Here it’s safe, here it’s warm
Here the daisies guard you from every harm
Here your dreams are sweet and tomorrow brings them true
Here is the place where I love you

Deep in the meadow, hidden far away
A cloak of leaves, a moonbeam ray
Forget your woes and let your troubles lay
And when again it’s morning, they’ll wash away

Here it’s safe and here it’s warm
And here the daisies guard you from every harm
And here your dreams are sweet and tomorrow brings them true
Here is the place where I love you

It’s been years since I watched this movie, so I don’t specifically remember this song or the scene, but it is quite beautiful.

As much as I appreciate a film’s score when I watch the film, it never occurs to me to listen separately. There is the occasional short piece that winds up in a playlist, perhaps, but more often than not, I always hear this music while watching the film (or the montage at awards shows and the like) it accompanies. Today I just listened. Quite haunting, beautiful and evocative, as the music brought me right back to the emotions of the film trilogy.
