Song of the Day #4,973: ‘The Last of Us Theme Song’ – Gustavo Santaolalla

Today is the 16th birthday of my younger daughter, Fiona.

When looking for a way to mark the occasion, I first thought about doing a week of “sweet sixteen” songs. I sure had plenty from which to choose. But it turns out almost every one of them is super creepy — like Jeffrey Epstein creepy.

Then I thought, why not let Fiona pick her own birthday tribute? So that’s what I did.

This week, Fiona will share some of her favorite “songs” — actually, instrumental pieces from movies, TV shows and a video game. This is a form of music fandom I never explored myself, and it’s been fascinating to watch Fiona discover it.

I’ll let her take it from here:

“To represent my all-time favorite video game, I chose the theme from The Last of Us. This excellent composition by Gustavo Santaolalla perfectly encapsulates the feeling of being in an apocalypse (at least what I think it would be like). Can’t wait to see how they incorporate this excellent work into the upcoming HBO series.”

Happy Birthday Fiona! What a great theme idea!

  3. Amy says:

Since this is Fiona’s favorite video game, I request that she be by my side if and when that fateful day comes. We can blast this music from whatever source we’re able to find, as I find it surprisingly soothing, which I did not expect at all. Looking forward to the discovery this week with you, Clay.

  4. Maddie says:

I’ve watched people play this game before, but this is great timing because I’m actually playing it through for the first time this week! Such a beautiful game and score. Looking forward to reading all of Fiona’s picks 🙂
