Song of the Day #4,843: ‘Relator’ – Scarlett Johansson & Pete Yorn

Captain Marvel Brie Larson isn’t the only Avenger with an album to her credit. Scarlett Johansson, Black Widow herself, has nurtured a music career on the side for more than a dozen years now.

Johansson’s 2008 debut album, Anywhere I Lay My Head, was a decidedly indie affair, featuring 10 covers of Tom Waits songs plus one original track. The murky production and deadpan, smoky vocals turned off many critics, but the release garnered something of a cult following.

A year later, Johansson teamed up with alt rocker Pete Yorn on a new album, titled Break Up. Inspired by the musical collaboration between Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot, the album tracks a relationship through a series of duets penned by Yorn.

Johansson’s film career took off around this time — she appeared in 31 movies over the next dozen years — but she did find time to form a band with Haim member Este Haim and perform songs in movies The Jungle Book and Sing.

In 2018, she and Yorn collaborated again on an EP titled Apart.

[Verse 1: Johansson]
When I met you
I didn’t know what to do. I was tired
I was hungry, I fight
Now I’m away
I write home everyday
And I see you on the TV at night

[Pre-Chorus: Johansson & Yorn]
You can see that life’s for us to talk about
You can leave whenever you want out
Whoa

[Chorus: Yorn]
You don’t relate to me
No girl
You don’t respect me
No girl
No girl. Oh yeah

[Verse 2: Johansson]
When I met you
I didn’t know what to do
But I noticed that I didn’t really feel
Now you’re away
You write home everyday. I don’t beg
I don’t borrow, I steal

[Pre-Chorus: Johansson & Yorn]
You don’t think that life’s for us to talk about
You can leave whenever you want out
You want out
Well, you don’t relate to me
No girl. You don’t respect me
No girl. (you can leave when ever you want out)

[Chorus: Johansson & Yorn]
And you don’t relate to me
No girl. And you don’t respect me
No girl. (You can leave whenever you want out)
No you don’t relate to me
No girl. And you don’t respect me
No girl. No girl. Yeah

  1. Dana Gallup says:

I’m looking forward to the 2022 movie release of “Avengers: The Musical!”

  2. Amy says:

All the times she’s been on SNL and she’s never been the musical guest. You’d think Colin Jost could pull a couple of strings.
