Song of the Day #4,768: ‘Wasted’ – Carrie Underwood

‘Wasted’ is the first song on Carrie Underwood’s 2005 debut studio album, Some Hearts. This was the fifth single released from the album and the third to top the country chart.

Released just six months after Underwood won the fourth season of American Idol, Some Hearts was an absolute juggernaut. It became 2006’s best-selling album in any genre, and was the best-selling country album in both 2006 and 2007.

I don’t know the album very well, apart from its smash hit ‘Before He Cheats.’ This came out before I took country music seriously, and it isn’t the kind of country music I gravitate toward anyway.

But I tip my hat to Ms. Underwood, who spun out five more platinum or multi-platinum albums after this one before breaking the streak with a Christmas album in 2020.

[Verse 1]
Standin’ at the back door
She tried to make it fast
One tear hit the hardwood
It fell like broken glass
She said sometimes love slips away
And you just can’t get it back
Let’s face it
For one split second
She almost turned around
But that would be like pouring raindrops
Back into a cloud
So she took another step
And said, “I see the way out and I’m gonna take it”

[Chorus]
I don’t wanna spend my life jaded
Waitin’ to wake up one day and find
That I let all these years go by
Wasted

[Verse 2]
Another glass of whiskey, but it still don’t kill the pain
So he stumbles to the sink and pours it down the drain
He said, “It’s time to be a man and stop living for yesterday
Gotta face it”
[Chorus]
‘Cause I don’t wanna spend my life jaded
Waitin’ to wake up one day and find
That I let all these years go by
Wasted
Oh, I don’t wanna keep on wishin’, missin’
The still of the morning, the color of the night
I ain’t spendin’ no more time
Wasted

[Bridge]
She kept driving along
Till the moon and the sun were floatin’ side-by-side
He looked in the mirror and his eyes were clear
For the first time in a while
Hey, yeah

[Chorus]
Oh, I don’t wanna spend my life jaded
Waitin’ to wake up one day and find
That I let all these years go by
Wasted
Oh, I don’t wanna keep on wishin’, missin’
The still of the morning, the color of the night
I ain’t spendin’ no more time
Wasted
Oh, I don’t wanna spend my life jaded
Waitin’ to wake up one day and find
That I let all these years go by
Wasted
Yeah, yeah
Oh, I don’t wanna keep on wishin’, missin’
The still of the morning, the color of the night
I ain’t spendin’ no more time
Wasted

  1. Dana Gallup says:

I was about to say that I only really know “Before He Cheats,” which may be one of my favorite country songs, but, as today’s song played, I realize I know this one as well.
