This is the third Leap Day since I started my Song of the Day blog back in 2008. That was a leap year as well, but I started posting songs in July so February had already passed.
My previous two Leap Day posts surprisingly contain no mention of the date. In 2012, I featured The Shins’ ‘Saint Simon’ during a week of unrelated songs (I did a lot fewer theme weeks in the blog’s early days).
The 2016 Leap Day post came in the middle of a controversial song-by-song exploration of Lucinda Williams’ album The Ghosts of Highway 20. Those 14 slow songs, performed in Williams’ gravelly drawl, tried the patience of my regular readers, but their loyalty kept them coming back.
My 2020 Leap Day post happens to fall on a Random Weekend, so no need to find something appropriate for the occasion. Maybe in 2024.
Instead, here’s a track from Lana Del Rey’s 2017 album Lust For Life. She co-wrote ‘Beautiful People Beautiful Problems’ with Stevie Nicks and they trade verses on the song. A lovely collaboration worthy of February 29.
Blue is the color of the planet from the view above
Long live our reign, long live our love
Green is the planet from the eyes of a turtle dove
‘Til it runs red, runs red with blood
[Pre-Chorus: Lana Del Rey]
We get so tired and we complain
‘Bout how it’s hard to live
It’s more than just a video game
[Chorus: Lana Del Rey]
But we’re just beautiful people
With beautiful problems, yeah
Beautiful problems, God knows we’ve got them
But we gotta try (Lie-la-lie)
Every day and night (Lie-la-lie)
[Verse 2: Stevie Nicks]
Blue is the collar of the shirt of the man I love
He’s hard at work, hard to the touch
But warm is the body of the girl from the land he loves
My heart is soft, my past is rough
[Pre-Chorus: Lana Del Rey, Both]
But when I love him, get a feeling
Something close to like a sugar rush
It runs through me, but is it wasted love?
(It’s not wasted love)
[Chorus: Lana Del Rey, Stevie Nicks, Both]
But we’re just beautiful people
With beautiful problems, yeah
Beautiful problems, God knows we’ve got them
But we gotta try (Lie-la-lie)
Every day and night (Lie-la-lie)
[Bridge: Lana Del Rey, Both]
Yeah we’ve gotta try (Lie-la-lie)
We gotta walk through fire (Lie-la-lie)
Because we’re just
[Chorus: Stevie Nicks, Both]
Beautiful people with beautiful problems, yeah
(We’re just)
Beautiful problems, God knows we’ve got them
(Beautiful people)
Beautiful people with beautiful problems, yeah
(We’re just)
Beautiful problems, God knows we’ve got them
[Outro: Lana Del Rey & Stevie Nicks]
So beautiful
Yeah
Yeah, yeah
Yeah
That’s a cool collaboration. Happy Leap Year! Now, don’t ever try that Lucinda Williams theme week again!
