Song of the Day #4,222: ‘Supersymmetry’ – Arcade Fire

I didn’t have much to say about today’s random selection, the final track from Arcade Fire’s 2013 album Reflektor. But then I realized it was originally written for the Spike Jonze movie Her and shows up during that film’s end credits, so that gave me a bit of a hook.

Her is one of a handful of films from the last decade that I wish I had revisited before compiling my ‘Best Movies of the 2010s’ list. It’s not that I think it would have a fighting chance of making the list, but it’s a movie I feel I owe a reconsideration.

When Her first came out, I expected to adore it. Jonze’s first two movies were the exquisite Being John Malkovich and Adaptation, two of my very favorites. He followed those up with Where the Wild Things Are, a bold vision of a classic children’s book. And then came Her, starring Joaquin Phoenix as a man who falls in love with the operating system of his phone (voiced by Scarlett Johansson).

This was pre-Siri and Alexa, and I bet today it feels even more eerily prophetic. Jonze won the Best Original Screenplay Oscar and the film was nominated for Best Picture.

I recall appreciating the film more than loving it, but I know a lot of people whose taste I generally share consider it a masterpiece. I’d like to give it another chance and see if it hits me harder the second time around.

[Verse 1]
I know you’re living in my mind
It’s not the same as being alive
I know you’re living in my mind
It’s not the same as being alive

[Hook]
Supersymmetry
Supersymmetry

[Verse 2]
If telling the truth is not polite
Then I guess you’ll have to fight
If telling the truth is not polite
Then I guess we’ll have to fight

[Hook]
Supersymmetry
Supersymmetry
Supersymmetry
Supersymmetry

[Verse 3]
I lived for a year, in the bed by the window
Reading books, better than memories
Wanna feel the seasons passing
Wanna feel the spring

[Hook]
Of supersymmetry
Supersymmetry
Supersymmetry
Supersymmetry

[Verse 4]
It’s been a while since I’ve been to see you
I don’t know where, but you’re not with me
Heard a voice, like an echo
But it came from me

[Hook]
Supersymmetry
Supersymmetry (supersymmetry)
Supersymmetry (supersymmetry)
Supersymmetry (supersymmetry)

[Bridge]
Ah, lalala lala
Ah, lalala lala
Ah, lalala lala
Ah, lalala lala

[Hook]
Supersymmetry
Supersymmetry
