Song of the Day #4,169: ‘Consideration (feat. SZA)’ – Rihanna

Best Albums of the 2010s – #19
Anti – Rihanna (2016)

After four straight years of new album releases, Rihanna went silent in 2012 before emerging four years later with one of her best albums, Anti.

While I’m a Rihanna stan going back a ways, and still consider Good Girl Gone Bad and Rated R her crowning achievements, it’s hard to deny the groundbreaking qualities of this album.

Anti is old-school in that it works best as a complete album rather than a collection of singles, but its sound feels completely fresh. Bringing a modern twist to songs influenced by trap, reggae, R&B and even 50s doo-wop, Rihanna delivers her best vocal performances ever, skipping elegantly between styles.

This is also the album that saw Rihanna evolve from a pop star to a fashion and culture icon. THis is when she became bigger than the music, and you can hear that confidence between the bars.

[Verse 1: Rihanna]
I came fluttering in from Neverland
Time can never stop me, no, no, no, no
I know you’ve tried to
I came riding in on a pale white horse
Handing out highs to less fortunate
I do advise you
Run it back, run it on back
When you breaking it down for me
Cause I can’t hear you, two times
Run it on back, will it ever make sense to me?

[Chorus: Rihanna]
I got to do things my own way darling
Will you ever let me
Will you ever respect me? No
Do things my own way darling
You should just let me
Why you ain’t ever let me grow?

[Post-Chorus: SZA]
When I look outside my window
I can’t get no piece of mind
When I look outside my window
I can’t get no peace of mind

[Verse 2: Rihanna]
Let me cover your shit in glitter
I could make it gold, gold
Heard you tryna sell your soul, baby
Word on the street, you run it low lately
I needed you to please give my reflection a break
From the face it’s seeing now
Ooh darling, gahhlee
Would you mind giving my reflection a break
From the pain it’s feeling now?

[Chorus: Rihanna & SZA]
I got to do things my own way darling
You should just let me
Will you ever respect me? No
Do things my own way darling
You should just let me
Why you ain’t ever let me grow?

[Post-Chorus: SZA]
When I look outside my window
I can’t get no piece of mind
When I look outside my window
I can’t get no peace of mind

[Outro: SZA (Rihanna)]
Get no piece
Get no peace
Get, get, getting no peace
Can’t get no peace
(Get, g-g-get no peace oh)

As has been well-documented on this blog, I was an early Rihanna detractor. I’m still not a fan, let alone a stan (nice hip nod to the youth with that one from a guy in his mid-40s btw😊), but I admit that she has evolved as a musician and artist, and I like her more now than I did then.

I definitely need to delve into this album more. I know Desperado really well and I love that song. I’m sure there are plenty of others on there, including this one, that could become favorites.

    And I thought stan was a typo😜

I have not yet listened to this album but based off this ringing endorsement, I feel I must give it a try. I loved the singles released off this record and meant to explore the rest but never got around to it. However, now with a place on your selective top 20 of the decade list I won’t put off my exploration further!
