Song of the Day #4,073: ‘Summer Girl’ – Haim

Haim is back with a breezy song that captures the lazy haze of summer — the appropriately titled ‘Summer Girl.’

The trio of California sisters has teamed up with director Paul Thomas Anderson once again on the video (this is their fourth collaboration with the filmmaker, who has known the ladies since he was a student of their art teacher mother).

Lead singer Danielle Haim wrote the song after her boyfriend was diagnosed with cancer. As she wrote on Twitter, “I was on tour and felt like I was trying to send positive energy his way almost telepathically. Whenever I would come home in between shows I wanted to be his sunshine — his summer when he was feeling dark. His hope when he was feeling hopeless.”

The video depicts the Haim sisters walking through hazy Los Angeles streets removing layer after layer of clothing, the shedding of shirts perhaps symbolic of shaking off problems. Or maybe it just looks cool. At one point they stop in the New Beverly movie theater, owned by Anderson’s friend Quentin Tarantino.

Great song, great video.

[Verse 1]
L.A. on my mind, I can’t breathe
You’re there when I close my eyes, so hard to reach
Your smiles turn into crying, it’s the same release
And you always know, and you always know

[Chorus]
I’m your summer girl
I’m your summer girl
I’m your summer girl
I’m your summer girl

[Refrain]
Du-du, du-du-du-du
Du-du-du-du, du-du-du-du-du
Du-du, du-du-du-du
Du-du-du-du, du-du-du-du-du
Du-du, du-du-du-du
Du-du-du-du, du-du-du-du-du
Du-du, du-du-du-du
Du-du-du-du, du-du-du-du-du

[Chorus 2]
Lightning in your eyes, you can’t speak
You’ve fallen from the sky, down to me
I see it in your face, I’m relief
I’m your summer girl

[Chorus]
I’m your summer girl
I’m your summer girl
I’m your summer girl
I’m your summer girl
I’m your summer girl
I’m your summer girl

[Refrain]
Du-du, du-du-du-du
Du-du-du-du, du-du-du-du-du
Du-du, du-du-du-du
Du-du-du-du, du-du-du-du-du
Du-du, du-du-du-du
Du-du-du-du, du-du-du-du-du
Du-du, du-du-du-du
Du-du-du-du, du-du-du-du-du

[Bridge]
Peer around the corner at you
From over my shoulder, I need you
I need you to understand
These are the earthquake drills that we ran
Under the freeway overpasses
The tears behind your dark sunglasses
The fears inside your heart as deep as gashes
Walk beside me, not behind me
Feel my unconditional love

[Refrain]
Du-du, du-du-du-du
Du-du-du-du, du-du-du-du-du
Du-du, du-du-du-du
Du-du-du-du, du-du-du-du-du
Du-du, du-du-du-du
Du-du-du-du, du-du-du-du-du

[Outro]
And I can see the angels coming down
Like a wave that’s crashing on the ground
I can see the angels coming now
Like a wave that’s crashing on the ground
