Song of the Day #4,072: ‘Mess With My Head’ – Miranda Lambert

My two most-anticipated albums this year are the new releases by Lana Del Rey (due this Friday) and Miranda Lambert (due Nov. 1). I’ll be listening to (and likely writing about) the Del Rey album very soon, but I still have a couple of months of waiting for the new Miranda.

Titled Wildcard, the new album will be Lambert’s seventh studio release. I’ve mentioned before that Lambert is one of the few artists about whom I can say that any one of her albums is her best. She is that consistently great.

Gun to my head, I’d name 2016’s The Weight of These Wings as her crowning achievement to date. That double album followed the breakup of her marriage to Blake Shelton and held up the tradition of great heartbreak records.

Wildcard is her first solo release since, and Lambert is in a more positive mindset this time around. If The Weight of These Wings was about endings and rebirth, Wildcard is about what comes next.

Based on one early song release — ‘Mess With My Head’ — that means exploring some new musical territory as well. This is the least traditionally country song Lambert has ever recorded. It’s New Wave meets Nashville, closer to The Cars than Johnny Cash.

A few other tracks hew closer to Lambert’s usual territory, but with lusher production, and have me extremely excited to hear the whole thing in context.

[Verse 1]
I had the palace looking nice and neat
Two feather pillows with expensive sheets
Sitting so pretty on my velvet couch
Before you came around

[Pre-Chorus]
You treat my mind like a hotel room
And I know why I gave the keys to you

[Chorus]
I let you mess with my, mess with my head
I let you mess with my, mess with my head

[Verse 2]
Maybe it’s wrong, but it feels right to me
Reveling in reverse psychology
You complicate it with your lying lips
I’m waiting on a kiss

[Chorus]
I let you mess with my, mess with my head
I let you mess with my, mess with my bed
Waking up to a wreck with blue jeans on the floor
It ain’t love and I like it better than before
I let you mess with my, mess with my head
I let you mess with my, mess with my, uh

[Pre-Chorus]
You treat my mind like a hotel room
And I know why I gave the keys to you

[Chorus]
I let you mess with my, mess with my head
I let you mess with my, mess with my bed
Waking up to a wreck with blue jeans on the floor
It ain’t love and I like it better than before
I let you mess with my, mess with my head
I let you mess with my, mess with my head

  1. Dana Gallup says:

To paraphrase Barak Obama and the movie “Yesterday,” this song is likeable enough, but it isn’t “Fix You.”
