Song of the Day #4,071: ‘Everybody Wants You’ – Red Hearse

When my Los Angeles-based niece, Madison, sends me a music recommendation, I’m smart enough to listen.

Last week she hit me up with a plug for Red Hearse, which immediately made me feel old because I had heard absolutely nothing about the band. The album has been out for only a little more than a week, though, so I can’t feel too bad.

Red Hearse is the latest project by Jack Antonoff (of fun. and Bleachers), who has teamed up with songwriter Sam Dew and producer Sounwave to release an eight-song album of melodic synth pop.

These three artists have done their best work behind the scenes. In addition to performing in his own bands, Antonoff has written with and produced St. Vincent, Lorde, Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey; Dew has written tracks for Rihanna, Mary J. Blige and Swift; Sounwave is the producer behind some of Kendrick Lamar’s most celebrated work.

Here, the three friends take center stage, collaborating to write, record and produce these tracks with Dew handling lead vocals. The songs were inspired by each of their hometowns (New Jersey for Antonoff, Chicago for Dew, and Compton for Sounwave).

The result is a glorious blend of Antonoff’s pop, Dew’s soul and Sounwave’s hip-hop influences, a record that doesn’t sound like anything else out there but somehow perfectly encapsulates the modern music scene.

Thank you, Maddie, for the recommendation!

[Verse 1]
Hey baby
Seems  like every time I’m close, you turn away, uh, mm
Seems  like all of a sudden everybody is on you
But I’ve been on ya, I’ve been on ya for a long time, uh
There’s a line around the block to get inside your head
Hey  baby
Feels  like I’ve been burnin’ up on the coldest day, uh, mm
Feels like I’m comin’ up on a perfect moment, take a moment
But  you don’t ’cause you don’t want it, uh
‘Cause everybody wants you

[Chorus]
I told you like I mean it, tell you all my secrets
I could take you dancin’, I’m not the romantic type
What  can I do? It’s love and I got the proof
But baby, what’s the use? ‘Cause everybody wants you
And each day’s the same, I call your name in the pourin’ rain
I’ll wait outside even if it takes all night
What can I do? It’s love and I got the proof
But baby, what’s the use? ‘Cause everybody wants you

[Post-Chorus]
Uh-huh, everybody wants you
Uh-huh, everybody wants you
Uh-huh, everybody wants you
Baby, what’s the use? ‘Cause everybody wants you

[Verse 2]
Oh, hey baby
Holdin’ on to every little word, everything you say, uh, mm
Another second or a minute or a moment to know you
They don’t know you, just to hold you
But it’s not time, uh
‘Cause there’s a line around the block, you could be mine instead
Hey baby
I could be the one to make you wanna stay, uh
Gimme one chance, I just want it, babe
More than a number, ’cause I want ya
But you’re not mine, uh
Tell me how it is when everybody wants you

[Chorus]
I told you like I mean it, tell you all my secrets
I could take you dancin’, I’m not the romantic type
What can I do? It’s love and I got the proof
But baby, what’s the use? ‘Cause everybody wants you
And each day’s the same, I call your name in the pourin’ rain
I’ll wait outside even if it takes all night
What can I do? It’s love and I got the proof
But baby, what’s the use? ‘Cause everybody wants you

[Post-Chorus]
Uh-huh, everybody wants you
Uh-huh, everybody wants you
Uh-huh, everybody wants you
Baby, what’s the use? ‘Cause everybody wants you (Ooh)
Uh-huh, everybody wants you (Ahh)
Uh-huh, everybody wants you
Uh-huh, everybody wants you
Baby, what’s the use? ‘Cause everybody wants you

Aww! I’m so glad you listened and enjoyed it. 🙂 The band is totally new as well, so don’t worry. If anything this is just a sign that I’m way too attuned into what Jack Antonoff is up to. In any case, I love this whole album and it’s been on repeat since it came out (truly only Taylor Swift has been strong enough to pull me away).

Our girl has great musical taste! She regularly makes playlists for Amy, and I get to enjoy them as well because they are on heavy rotation in Amy’s car. Our boy has great musical taste as well, so I guess we did something right in sharing with them wonderful artists from our generation.
