Song of the Day #4,062: ‘Livin’ On a Prayer’ – Bon Jovi

Four months ago I wrote a series of posts about the latest inductees into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. I considered the idea of covering each new slate of entries working backward through the years.

This week, I’m taking my own advice and posting about the six inductees into the Rock Hall Class of 2018.

First up (alphabetically) is Bon Jovi.

The New Jersey rock band had been eligible for entry into the Hall since 2008, and were nominated once before (in 2011) before making the cut last year.

Bon Jovi has released 14 studio albums starting with their self-titled debut in 1984. They have recorded steadily, releasing records in each of the last four decades and selling more than 120 million albums during that time. Their biggest hit, 1986’s Slippery When Wet, has sold 28 million copies worldwide and is one of the top 50 best-selling albums in the United States.

Slippery When Wet featured the hits ‘Wanted Dead or Alive,’ ‘You Give Love a Bad Name’ and today’s SOTD, ‘Livin’ On a Prayer’ — certainly the holy trinity of the band’s output.

I love those songs like any self-respecting Gen X-er should, but I have never dived any deeper into Bon Jovi’s catalog. In fact, I was shocked to realize that this post — #4,062 — is the first I’ve ever dedicated to the band.

[Intro]
Once upon a time, not so long ago

[Verse 1]
Tommy used to work on the docks, union’s been on strike
He’s down on his luck, it’s tough, so tough
Gina works the diner all day, working for her man
She brings home her pay for love, mmm, for love

[Pre-Chorus]
She says, “We’ve got to hold on to what we’ve got
It doesn’t make a difference if we make it or not
We’ve got each other and that’s a lot for love
We’ll give it a shot”

[Chorus]
Woah, we’re halfway there
Woah-oh, livin’ on a prayer
Take my hand, we’ll make it, I swear
Woah-oh, livin’ on a prayer

[Verse 2]
Tommy’s got his six-string in hock, now he’s holding in
What he used to make it talk so tough, ooh, it’s tough
Gina dreams of running away when she cries in the night
Tommy whispers, “Baby, it’s okay, someday”

[Pre-Chorus]
We’ve got to hold on to what we’ve got
It doesn’t make a difference if we make it or not
We’ve got each other and that’s a lot for love
We’ll give it a shot”

[Chorus]
Woah, we’re halfway there
Woah-oh, livin’ on a prayer
Take my hand, we’ll make it I swear
Woah-oh, livin’ on a prayer, livin’ on a prayer

[Guitar Solo]

[Bridge]
Ooh, we’ve got to hold on, ready or not
You live for the fight when it’s all that you’ve got

[Chorus]
Woah, we’re halfway there
Woah-oh, livin’ on a prayer
Take my hand and we’ll make it, I swear
Woah-oh, livin’ on a prayer
Woah, we’re halfway there
Woah-oh, livin’ on a prayer
Take my hand and we’ll make it, I swear
Woah-oh, livin’ on a prayer
Woah, we’re halfway there
Woah-oh, livin’ on a prayer
Take my hand and we’ll make it, I swear…
(Woah, we’re halfway there
Woah-oh, livin’ on a prayer)

Did you mean to start this on the weekend? Did you obtain permission from the Random iTunes Fairy?

Anyway, I feel about Bon Jovi the same way you do. They were woven into the fabric of my youth, but I was never a huge fan. In the right mood, though, I will enjoy the nostalgia of their hits, particularly when a much younger Daniel would belt out today’s song.

Because I have six acts to cover, I’m starting today in order to finish Friday. The Random iTunes Fairy has allowed it. 🙂

What Dana has said is true. This song will always hold a special place in my heart as I would belt this out on the Wii game American Idol at the top of my lungs. I would actually credit this and a couple other of my signature idol choices as songs that inspired me to become a musician. I really loved the specificity of these lyrics even as a kid and was so curious about the stories behind them. I’d always loved singing but there was something about the groove of this song and the lyrics and of course the soaring chorus that seemed a step above. I realized how much power can exist in how you craft a song. I will still belt this song out at the top of my lungs though I think I did it much better back then!

Can’t wait to hear you belt this song out Daniel ❤️

I’m not typically all that aware of which groups are being inducted, but Bon Jovi asked Howard Stern to introduce them giving his listeners the chance to hear more about Bon Jovi… and the whole Hall of Fame process… then any of us knew we wanted. :). I’m only a sporadic listener, and I felt as if I was there at the induction. Jon Bon Jovi’s excitement and pride at being inducted was infectious. I love this idea for a theme.
