Song of the Day #3,981: ‘Fell in Love with a Girl’ – The White Stripes

The White Stripes’ third album, White Blood Cells, was released in 2001 to universal acclaim and a rising tide of publicity. Music critics were going gaga over the “brother/sister” band that was actually a former married couple, who wore only black, red and white, who performed with guitar and drums but never a bass, and who made a living resurrecting the blues.

The scrutiny was wearing on Jack and Meg White during the recording of White Blood Cells, and they nodded to it with the album’s cover photo, which depicts them surrounded by shadowy figures wielding cameras and microphones.

On this album, the band strayed from their blues roots to embrace more of a garage rock sound. Most of the songs are short, fast and loud. Its 16 tracks clock in at a neat 40 minutes.

The album is a bit too chock full of goodies for my taste. I think they got the mix right on their next record, Elephant. But this one does feature some gems, including the rich ‘The Union Forever,’ with lyrics pulled entirely from the dialogue of Citizen Kane, and ‘We’re Going to Be Friends,’ a quiter, acoustic track about a high school romance.

The breakout hit, though, was ‘Fell in Love with a Girl,’ a two-minute blast of guitars and attitude that was accompanied by a Michel Gondry-directed video featuring LEGO stop-motion animation.

[Chorus]
Fell in love with a girl
I fell in love once and almost completely
She’s in love with the world
But sometimes, these feelings can be so misleading
She turns and says, “Are you alright?”
I said, “I must be fine ’cause my heart’s still beating.”
“Come and kiss me by the riverside, yeah
Bobby says it’s fine, he don’t consider it cheating, now.”

[Verse 1]
Red hair with a curl
Mello-Roll for the flavor, and the eyes were peeping
Can’t keep away from the girl
These two sides of my brain need to have a meeting

[Bridge]
Can’t think of anything to do, yeah
My left brain knows that all love is fleeting
She’s just looking for something new, yeah
I said it once before, but it bears repeating now

Aah, aah
Aah, aah

Can’t think of anything to do, yeah
My left brain knows that all love is fleeting
She’s just looking for something new
Well, I said it once before, but it bears repeating now

[Chorus]
Fell in love with a girl
I fell in love once and almost completely
She’s in love with the world
But sometimes, these feelings can be so misleading
She turns and says, “Are you alright?”
I said, “I must be fine because my heart’s still beating.”
“Come and kiss me by the riverside, yeah
Bobby says it’s fine he don’t consider it cheating, now.”

Aah, aah
Aah, aah

[Bridge]
Can’t think of anything to do, yeah
My left brain knows that all love is fleeting
She’s just looking for something new
Well, I said it once before, but it bears repeating now
