Song of the Day #3,954: ‘This is Me (Rehearsal)’ – Keala Settle

On a recent trip down a YouTube rabbit hole, I stumbled across this clip from the rehearsals of the 2017 hit musical The Greatest Showman. I’m surprised I haven’t encountered it before as it has amassed more than 40 million views already.

Apparently this was a presentation to the studio brass, the first time the cast had performed any of the songs for somebody outside of their inner circle. Keala Settle, who plays the bearded lady, was incredibly nervous about singing the film’s signature tune, ‘This is Me,’ in that setting.

It’s inspiring to watch her emerge from behind a music stand and take center stage despite her obvious fear. She feeds off the energy of her backup singers, as well as star Hugh Jackman, and turns the rehearsal into a moment with real emotional power.

I’m sure the studio bosses saw everything they needed to see in these few minutes to know this film would be a big hit.

[Verse 1: Lettie Lutz]
I am not a stranger to the dark
“Hide away”, they say
“‘Cause we don’t want your broken parts”
I’ve learned to be ashamed of all my scars
“Run away”, they say
“No one’ll love you as you are”

[Pre-Chorus: Lettie Lutz]
But I won’t let them break me down to dust
I know that there’s a place for us
For we are glorious

[Chorus: Lettie Lutz]
When the sharpest words wanna cut me down
I’m gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out
I am brave, I am bruised
I am who I’m meant to be, this is me
Look out ’cause here I come
And I’m marching on to the beat I drum
I’m not scared to be seen
I make no apologies, this is me

[Post-Chorus: Ensemble]
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh, oh

[Verse 2: Lettie Lutz, Ensemble]
Another round of bullets hits my skin
Well, fire away ’cause today, I won’t let the shame sink in
We are bursting through the barricades
And reaching for the sun
(We are warriors)
Yeah, that’s what we’ve become
(Yeah, that’s what we’ve become)

[Pre-Chorus: Lettie Lutz and Ensemble]
Won’t let them break me down to dust
I know that there’s a place for us
For we are glorious

[Chorus: Lettie Lutz and Ensemble]
When the sharpest words wanna cut me down
Gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out
I am brave, I am bruised
I am who I’m meant to be, this is me
Look out ’cause here I come
And I’m marching on to the beat I drum
I’m not scared to be seen
I make no apologies, this is me

[Post-Chorus: Lettie Lutz and Ensemble, Ensemble]
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh, oh
This is me

[Bridge: Lettie Lutz, Ensemble]
(Oh-oh-oh-oh)
And I know that I deserve your love
(Oh-oh-oh-oh)
There’s nothing I’m not worthy of
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh, oh

[Pre-Chorus: Lettie Lutz]
When the sharpest words wanna cut me down
I’m gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out
This is brave, this is bruised
This is who I’m meant to be, this is me

[Chorus: Lettie Lutz, Ensemble, Both]
Look out ’cause here I come
(Look out ’cause here I come)
And I’m marching on to the beat I drum
(Marching on, marching, marching on)
I’m not scared to be seen
I make no apologies, this is me

[Outro: Lettie Lutz, Ensemble, Both]
(Oh-oh-oh-oh)
When the sharpest words wanna break me down
I’m gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out
(Oh-oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh)
(Oh-oh-oh-oh)
I’m gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out
(Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh,

The whole trite “power of music” business sure does reveal itself in a moment like this one. I’d never seen it before. Just love the way this cast worked like a Broadway troupe bringing their story to the screen.
