Song of the Day #3,955: ‘This Life’ – Vampire Weekend

At long last, today marks the release of Father of the Bride, Vampire Weekend’s fourth studio album. This is one of my most anticipated records of the year given the band’s stellar track record to date.

Early song releases have been promising, though a few of them were more like filler than actual songs. That’s fine with me. I don’t like hearing much of an album before I can hear the whole thing.

I’ll have more to say about Father of the Bride once I give it a few listens, but for now I’ll offer up one of the recently dropped tracks.

‘This Life’ is a jaunty tune with rather depressing lyrics about disillusionment with a relationship and with life in general. The chorus is tweaked from a song by rapper ILoveMakonnen, though Ezra Koenig does much more interesting things with it here.

Musically, ‘This Life’ sounds a lot like Van Morrison’s ‘Brown Eyed Girl,’ which is intriguing after earlier single ‘Harmony Hall’ owed so much to the Grateful Dead. It seems Koenig is leaning more on American folk-rock influences and less on world beats this time around.

[Verse 1]
Baby, I know pain is as natural as the rain
I just thought it didn’t rain in California
Baby, I know love isn’t what I thought it was
‘Cause I’ve never known a love like this before ya
Baby, I know dreams tend to crumble at extremes
I just thought our dream would last a little bit longer
There’s a time when every man draws a line down in the sand
We’re surviving, we’re still living, I was stronger

[Chorus]
You’ve been cheating on, cheating on me
I’ve been cheating on, cheating on you
You’ve been cheating on me
But I’ve been cheating through this life and all its suffering
Oh Christ, am I good for nothing?

[Verse 2]
Baby, I know hate is always waiting at the gate
I just thought we locked the gate when we left in the morning
And I was told that war is how we landed on these shores
I just thought the drums of war beat louder warnings

[Chorus]
You’ve been cheating on, cheating on me
I’ve been cheating on, cheating on you
You’ve been cheating on me
But I’ve been cheating through this life
(You’ve been cheating on, cheating on me
I’ve been cheating on, cheating on you)
And all its suffering
(You’ve been cheating on me, I’ve been cheating through)
Oh Christ
(You’ve been cheating on, cheating on me
I’ve been cheating on, cheating on you)
Am I good for nothing?
(You’ve been cheating on me, I’ve been cheating through)

[Verse 3]
Baby, I know death probably hasn’t happened yet
‘Cause I don’t remember living life before this
And darling, our disease is the same one as the trees
Unaware that they’ve been living in a forest

[Chorus]
You’ve been cheating on, cheating on me
I’ve been cheating on, cheating on you
You’ve been cheating on me
But I’ve been cheating through this life
(You’ve been cheating on, cheating on me
I’ve been cheating on, cheating on you)
And all its suffering
(You’ve been cheating on me, I’ve been cheating through)
Oh Christ
(You’ve been cheating on, cheating on me
I’ve been cheating on, cheating on you)
Am I good for nothing?
(You’ve been cheating on me, I’ve been cheating through)
This life
(You’ve been cheating on, cheating on me
I’ve been cheating on, cheating on you)
And all its suffering
(You’ve been cheating on me, I’ve been cheating through)
Oh Christ
(You’ve been cheating on, cheating on me
I’ve been cheating on, cheating on you)
Am I good for nothing?

  1. Dana Gallup says:

This skews far closer to VW’s sound, mostly due to the guitar, but also Ezra’s vocal style. I like this one a lot on first listen, and look forward to hearing the rest of the new album.
