Of all of this year’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees, The Zombies have waited the longest for the honor. They first became eligible 30 years ago and were previously nominated in 2014, 2017 and 2018 before finally making the cut.
The delay is probably due to the fact that The Zombies’ influence is essentially limited to one album and a few singles. The band split up after just a couple of years and two studio album releases in the mid 60s (before reuniting in the 2000s).
The band’s second album, 1968’s Odessey and Oracle, is considered one of the seminal British invasion albums and a highlight of the decade. Rolling Stone named it the 100th best album of all time. It featured the classics ‘Time of the Season‘ and ‘This Will Be Our Year,’ among lesser known but equally worthy tracks.
The Zombies split up before Odessey and Oracle was released, and the album fell flat both commercially and critically. Only years later did its stature start to grow. And 50 years later, it helped land the band in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Thinking of me while you are far away
Counting the days until they set you free again
Writing this letter hoping you’re okay
Saved you the room you used to stay in every Sunday
The one that is warmed by sunshine every day
And we’ll get to know each other for a second time
And then you can tell me ’bout your prison stay
Feels so good you’re coming home soon
It’s gonna to be good to have you back again with me
Watching the laughter play around your eyes
Come up and fetch you, saved up for the train fare money
Kiss and make up and it will be so nice
Feels so good you’re coming home soon
Walking the way we used to walk
And it could be so nice
We’re talking the way we used to talk
And it could be so nice
It’s gonna be good to have you back again with me
Watching the laughter play around your eyes
Come up and fetch you, saved up for the train fare money
Kiss and make up and it will be so nice
Feels so good you’re coming home soon
Feels so good you’re coming home soon
“Time of the Season” is classic, but I don’t think the band should be in the Rock Hall.
