Song of the Day #1,437: ‘Time of the Season’ – The Zombies

Best Albums of the 60s – #20
Odessey and Oracle – The Zombies (1968)

This freight train back through time keeps rumbling on. I can’t resist the urge to carry these decade-best lists back ten more years into the 60s.

At first I resisted, realizing that this list would be dominated by two or three artists. But after browsing several “official” best-of lists across the web, I realized that every one of them was dominated by the same people. It’s not that I’m woefully out of touch with the music of the decade — it’s just that certain musicians, at the dawn of the rock-n-roll era, completely dominated the landscape.

I’m sure you can guess those artists, and you’ll hear from them soon (and often) but I’m kicking things off with an album I only recently discovered.

The Zombies’ Odessey and Oracle is a psychedelic treasure, utilizing the studio tricks of the trade that The Beatles had popularized (it was even recorded at Abbey Road). The yearning vocals on opening tracks ‘Care of Cell 44’ and ‘A Rose For Emily,’ coupled with a baroque pop carnival sound, truly capture the mix of wide-eyed innocence and fearless experimentation that marks the greatest 60s music.

The best-known tracks on Odessey and Oracle are the hopeful ‘This Will Be Our Year’ and the unexpected hit single ‘Time of the Season.’ Released more than a year after the album came out, this song is instantly familiar even to those (like me, awhile back) who never knew The Zombies existed.

It’s the Time Of the Season.
When love runs high.
And this time, give it to me easy.
And let me try with pleasured hands.

To take you in the sun to (promised lands).
To show you every one. It’s the time of
the season for loving.

What’s your name? Who’s your daddy?
(He rich) Is he rich like me.
Has he taken, any time.
(To show) To show you what you need to live.

Tell it to me slowly (tell me what).
I really want to know. It’s the time of
the season for loving.

I’m fairly sure this is the only Zombies song I know and if you put a gun to my head I couldn’t have told you who sang it, though I’ve always liked it.

I’m sure Amy will chime in later with a post of the American Idol version of the song from Blake Lewis:)

Looking forward to exploring the 60’s even if it will be dominated by The Monkeys.

Love this song and looking forward to the 60’s countdown! (My American idol video will have to wait until I am on a computer rather than a kindle 😉
