Song of the Day #3,890: ‘Remember the Time’ – Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson’s Dangerous is the top-selling 1991 album worldwide, though it has sold “only” 8 million copies in the United States. Jackson’s follow-up to Bad and Thriller doesn’t have as many hits as those albums but it certainly found an audience.

I remember listening to this album a fair amount when it came out, though skimming it now I don’t recognize most of the songs. The exceptions are ‘Black and White,’ ‘Heal the World,’ ‘Dangerous,’ and today’s SOTD, ‘Remember the Time.’ I don’t much like any of those other than this one, but I like this one a lot.

This album is considered a prime example of the new jack swing style, which blended R&B and hip-hop sounds. Jackson’s sister Janet was another artist who pioneered that sound.

I wonder what sort of reassessment of Jackson’s career we’re in for with the impending release of an HBO documentary that lays out a convincing case that he was a sex predator. His defenders are legion, already attacking the two men who came forward with their stories of sexual abuse. But times have changed and the powerful aren’t escaping judgement as easily as in the past.

I’ve always believed the rumors about Jackson’s creepy ways. And yet I’ve never stopped enjoying his best music. Not sure how I feel about that.

[Verse 1]
Do you remember when we fell in love?
We were young and innocent then
Do you remember how it all began?
It just seemed like heaven, so why did it end?

[Pre-Chorus 1]
Do you remember, back in the fall?
We’d be together all day long
Do you remember us holding hands?
In each other’s eyes, we’d stare
Tell me

[Chorus]
Do you remember the time?
When we fell in love
Do you remember the time?
When we first met, girl
Do you remember the time?
(Oh, I)
When we fell in love
Do you remember the time?

[Verse 2]
Do you remember how we used to talk?
You know, we’d stay on the phone at night till dawn
Do you remember all the things we said?
Like, “I love you so, I’ll never let you go”

[Pre-Chorus 2]
Do you remember, back in the spring?
Every morning, birds would sing
Do you remember those special times?
They’ll just go on and on
In the back of my mind

[Chorus]
Do you remember the time?
When we fell in love
Do you remember the time?
When we first met, girl
Do you remember the time?
(Oh, I)
When we fell in love
Do you remember the time?

[Bridge]
Those sweet memories
Will always be dear to me
And girl no matter what was said
I will never forget what we had
Now baby

[Chorus]
Do you remember the time?
When we fell in love
Do you remember the time?
When we first met, girl
Do you remember the time?
(Oh, I)
When we fell in love
Do you remember the time?
(Remember, my baby)
Do you remember the time?
(Cause I remember)
When we fell in love
Do you remember the time?
(All in my mind, girl)
Do you remember the time?
(Oh, I)
When we fell in love
Do you remember the time?
(Remember, my baby)

[Breakdown]
(Remember the time)
Ooh!
(Remember the time)
Do you remember, girl?
(Remember the time)
On the phone, you and me
(Remember the time)
Till dawn, two or three
What about us, girl?
(Remember the time)
Do you, do you, do you?
(Remember the time)
Do you, do you?
In the park, on the beach
(Remember the time)
You and me, in Spain
What about, what about
(Remember the time)
Grrrrrat, tat tat, tat
Grrrrrat, tat tat
(Remember the time)
Ooh! In the park
(Remember the time)
After dark, do you, do you, do you?
(Remember the time)
Do you, do you, do you, did you?
(Remember the time)
Yeah, yeah, woo!
(Remember the time, remember the time)

  1. Dana Gallup says:

I don’t begrudge victims coming forward, but I do question the need for the documentary. What exactly is to be gained here? The man is dead, and there were enough allegations raised while he was alive to impact his reputation.

  2. Peg says:

I agree and that’s why I still love Woody Allen’s films.

  3. Amy says:

I, too, agree, and I’m also not sure how I feel about that. Apparently Daniel and a group of friends got into a spirited discussion about this topic yesterday. Would definitely love to talk about it in person.
