Song of the Day #3,889: ‘In Bloom’ – Nirvana

I can’t write about the music of 1991 without mentioning Nirvana’s Nevermind, the smash hit that ushered in the grunge era and defined the sound of the decade to come.

I was never a Nirvana fan, though I do like the album’s four hit singles: ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit,’ ‘Come As You Are,’ ‘Lithium‘ and today’s SOTD, ‘In Bloom.’ This might be the best of them.

I skimmed the rest of the album in preparation for this blog entry and I was thoroughly unimpressed. But then, I’ve always believed you need just three great songs to make a great album, and this one has four.

Nevermind sold 10 million copies in the U.S. and 30 million worldwide. It was the second best selling album of the year in the states and third in the world. I’ll get to the two that topped it over the next few weeks. In fact, I’ll get to one of them tomorrow.

[Verse 1]
Sell the kids for food
Weather changes moods
Spring is here again
Reproductive glands

[Chorus]
He’s the one who likes all our pretty songs
And he likes to sing along and he likes to shoot his gun
But he knows not what it means
Knows not what it means when I say
He’s the one who likes all our pretty songs
And he likes to sing along and he likes to shoot his gun
But he knows not what it means
Knows not what it means and I say yeah

[Verse 2]
We can have some more
Nature is a whore
Bruises on the fruit
Tender age in bloom

[Chorus]
He’s the one who likes all our pretty songs
And he likes to sing along and he likes to shoot his gun
But he don’t know what it means
Don’t know what it means when I say
He’s the one who likes all our pretty songs
And he likes to sing along and he likes to shoot his gun
But he knows not what it means
Knows not what it means and I say yeah

[Guitar Solo]

Knows not what it means
Knows not what it means
Knows not what it means and I say yeah

I never was a big fan of Nirvana or the grunge sound. This video is pretty fun though.
