Song of the Day #3,876: ‘Love It If We Made It’ – The 1975

The seventh and eighth top songs on 2018’s Pazz & Jop poll have also been featured on the blog before, demonstrating exactly how firmly I have my finger on the pulse of the popular music landscape. Or that I have to post 365 songs each year so I’m bound to get it right once in awhile.

At #7 is Kacey Musgraves with ‘High Horse,’ the first single from her celebrated album Golden Hour. Golden Hour claimed the #1 spot on the poll’s album list, adding to a year of tremendous accolades for Musgraves’s third full-length release, culminating in the Album of the Year Grammy this past weekend. That album is certainly appreciated in my house.

The eighth spot belongs to Kendrick Lamar and SZA, who teamed up for ‘All the Stars‘ on the Black Panther soundtrack (which landed at #27 on the albums list).

English indie rock band The 1975 take the ninth spot with ‘Love It If We Made It,’ which reads like an exasperated ‘We Didn’t Start the Fire’ for the first two years of the Trump presidency.

[Verse 1]
We’re fucking in a car, shooting heroin
Saying controversial things just for the hell of it
Selling melanin and then suffocate the black men
Start with misdemeanours and we’ll make a business out of them
And we can find out the information
Access all the applications
That are hardening positions based on miscommunication
Oh, fuck your feelings
Truth is only hearsay
We’re just left to decay
Modernity has failed us

[Chorus]
And I’d love it if we made it
Yes, I’d love it if we made it
Yes, I’d love it if we made it
Yes, I’d love it if we made it

[Verse 2]
And poison me, daddy
I got the Jones right through my bones
Write it on a piece of stone
A beach of drowning three-year olds
Rest in peace Lil Peep
The poetry is in the streets
Jesus save us
Modernity has failed us

[Chorus]
And I’d love it if we made it
Yes, I’d love it if we made it
Yes, I’d love it if we made it
Yes, I’d love it if we made it
And I’d love it if we made it
And I’d love it if we made it
And I’d love it if we made it
I’d love it if we made it

Tell me something I didn’t know

[Bridge]
Consultation
Degradation
Fossil fueling
Masturbation
Immigration
Liberal kitsch
Kneeling on a pitch

[Verse 3]
“I moved on her like a bitch!”
Excited to be indicted
Unrequited house with seven pools
“Thank you Kanye, very cool!”
The war has been incited
And guess what, you’re all invited
And you’re famous
Modernity has failed us

[Outro]
And I’d love it if we made it
And I’d love it if we made it
And I’d love it if we made it
Tell me something I didn’t know
And I’d love it if we made it
And I’d love it if we made it
And I’d love it if we made it
And I’d love it if we made it

I’d love it if we made it too! Hopefully, only two years or less to go!

Big fan of 1975. Hadn’t heard this one yet, but it’s good stuff too. Here’s to making it through!
