Song of the Day #3,604: ‘High Horse’ – Kacey Musgraves

Miranda Lambert is my country music queen, sitting high atop a pedestal, out of reach of most singer-songwriters both inside and outside of the genre. She’s untouchable.

But if she has an heir apparent, it could well be Kacey Musgraves, who just released Golden Hour, her third straight album of delightful country pop and appears to be on a similar critical and commercial trajectory.

Musgraves has even landed a plum spot opening for Harry Styles on the U.S. leg of his tour. I know this because my daughters have tickets and anticipate the show with the wide-eyed fervor some people exhibit when granted an audience with the Pope.

While Musgraves’ first two albums were pretty traditional in sound (if not lyrics), Golden Hour takes some chances musically. From West Coast rock flavors to the disco flair of single ‘High Horse,’ these are country songs filtered through other genres. Still, the result feels organic, not at all a stunt but rather a reflection of where Musgraves’ own musical interests lie.

Like Lambert, she pushes boundaries without sacrificing the authenticity that’s key to her appeal. I’m hooked.

[Verse 1]
Oh, I bet you think you’re John Wayne
Showing up and shooting down everybody
You’re classic in the wrong way
And we all know the end of the story

[Pre-Chorus]
‘Cause everyone knows someone who kills the buzz
Every time they open up their mouth
Yeah, everyone knows someone who knows someone
Who thinks they’re cooler than everybody else

[Chorus]
And I think we’ve seen enough, seen enough
To know that you ain’t ever gonna come down
So, why don’t you giddy up, giddy up
And ride straight out of this town
You and your high horse
You and your high horse

[Verse 2]
I bet you think you’re first place
Yeah, someone should give you a ribbon
And put you in the hall of fame
For all the games that you think that you’re winning

[Pre-Chorus]
‘Cause everyone knows someone who kills the buzz
Every time they open up their mouth
Yeah, everyone knows someone who knows someone
Who thinks they’re cooler than everybody else

[Chorus]
And I think we’ve seen enough, seen enough
To know that you ain’t ever gonna come down
So, why don’t you giddy up, giddy up
And ride straight out of this town
You and your high horse
You and your high horse

[Bridge]
Darling, you take the high horse and I’ll take the high road
If you’re too good for us, you’ll be good riding solo

[Chorus]
Yeah, I think we’ve seen enough, seen enough
To know that you ain’t ever gonna come down
So, why don’t you giddy up, giddy up
And ride straight out of this town
You and your high horse
You and your high horse
High horse
You ain’t ever gonna come down
You ain’t ever gonna come down

Are you going to the concert with your daughters? Sounds like it would be a good one.
