Song of the Day #3,875: ‘Nobody’ – Mitski

The #6 song on this year’s Village Voice Pazz &amp Jop poll comes from Mitski’s album Be the Cowboy, which tied with Cardi B’s Invasion of Privacy for #3 on the Top Albums list.

I have heard a lot of good things about Mitski, and this album in particular, but I regret to report that I just didn’t get it. I didn’t hear any memorable melodies, the production was unimpressive, and overall the whole thing just fell flat. But clearly it is striking a nerve for a lot of people, so this one might just be on me.

‘Nobody’ is a nice enough song. It does an effective job capturing the feeling of being all alone in a strange place. But the sixth best song of the year?

[Verse 1]
My God, I’m so lonely
So I open the window
To hear sounds of people
To hear sounds of people

[Verse 2]
Venus, planet of love
Was destroyed by global warming
Did its people want too much too?
Did its people want too much?

[Pre-Chorus 1]
And I don’t want your pity
I just want somebody near me
Guess I’m a coward
I just want to feel alright
And I know no one will save me
I just need someone to kiss
Give me one good honest kiss
And I’ll be alright

[Chorus]
Nobody, nobody, nobody
Nobody, nobody
Ooh, nobody, nobody, nobody

[Verse 3]
I’ve been big and small and
Big and small and
Big and small again
And still nobody wants me
Still nobody wants me

[Pre-Chorus 2]
And I know no one will save me
I’m just asking for a kiss
Give me one good movie kiss
And I’ll be alright

[Chorus]
Nobody, nobody, nobody
Nobody, nobody
Ooh, nobody, nobody
Nobody, nobody, nobody
Nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody
Nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody
Nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody
Nobody, nobody
Nobody, nobody
Nobody, nobody, no

  1. Dana Gallup says:

Neither Mitski nor this song has been on my radar at all. The song is decent enough, but I agree it’s nothing spectacular.
