Song of the Day #3,562: ‘Two Ghosts’ – Harry Styles

Another benefit of streaming is that it allows me to catch up with albums that passed me by in recent years.

Many albums fall just outside of my radar when they first come out and end up eclipsed by future releases. The same thing happens with movies. I still have a dozen or so titles on my 2017 to-see list, but how many of those will I realistically get to once a new set of films make up this year’s list?

Now that I can download any album I want, I find myself reaching back to releases I missed over the past few years.

Harry Styles’ self-titled solo debut is a good example. The album did well both commercially and critically — not to mention among my younger family members — but I never got around to listening.

Now that I have, I understand the praise. Styles taps into a 60s and 70s rock vibe, channeling David Bowie and The Beatles. He’s even been accused of ripping off ‘Blackbird’ on his latest single, which I would take as a compliment. I wish more modern pop songs sounded like ‘Blackbird.’

Styles is already a superstar thanks to his stint in One Direction, but this album suggests he has a hell of a solo career ahead.

[Verse 1]
Same lips red, same eyes blue
Same white shirt, couple more tattoos
But it’s not you and it’s not me
Tastes so sweet, looks so real
Sounds like something that I used to feel
But I can’t touch what I see

[Chorus]
We’re not who we used to be
We’re not who we used to be
We’re just two ghosts standing in the place of you and me
Trying to remember how it feels to have a heartbeat

[Verse 2]
The fridge light washes this room white
Moon dances over your good side
This was all we used to need
Tongue-tied like we’ve never known
Telling those stories we already told
‘Cause we don’t say what we really mean

[Chorus]
We’re not who we used to be
We’re not who we used to be
We’re just two ghosts standing in the place of you and me
We’re not who we used to be
We’re not who we used to be
We’re just two ghosts swimming in a glass half empty
Trying to remember how it feels to have a heartbeat

[Chorus]
We’re not who we used to be
We’re not who we used to be
We’re just two ghosts standing in the place of you and me
We’re not who we used to be
We don’t see what we used to see
We’re just two ghosts swimming in a glass half empty
Trying to remember how it feels to have a heartbeat

[Outro]
Trying to remember how it feels to have a heartbeat
I’m just trying to remember how it feels to have a heartbeat
