Song of the Day #3,403: ‘Purple Rain’ – Prince

The Random iTunes Fairy must still be in a tribute mood after this week’s Tom Petty retrospective. Here’s Prince with his classic ‘Purple Rain.’

I was surprised this song hasn’t shown up on the blog before now. In fact, only two songs from the Purple Rain soundtrack (‘Computer Blue’ and ‘The Beautiful Ones’) have been given the Song of the Day treatment, and both of those were on Random Weekends as well.

I guess that fact outs me as more of an appreciator of Prince than a fan. I love many of his songs but I don’t spend a lot of time listening to his albums.

In fact, for my money, the best version of today’s SOTD is by my teenage nephew, Daniel.

[Verse 1]
I never meant to cause you any sorrow
I never meant to cause you any pain
I only wanted to one time to see you laughing
I only wanted to see you
Laughing in the purple rain

[Chorus]
Purple rain, purple rain
Purple rain, purple rain
Purple rain, purple rain
I only wanted to see you
Bathing in the purple rain

[Verse 2]
I never wanted to be your weekend lover
I only wanted to be some kind of friend
Baby, I could never steal you from another
It’s such a shame our friendship had to end

[Chorus]
Purple rain, purple rain
Purple rain, purple rain
Purple rain, purple rain
I only wanted to see you
Bathing in the purple rain

[Verse 3]
Honey, I know, I know
I know times are changing
It’s time we all reach out
For something new, that means you too
You say you want a leader
But you can’t seem to make up your mind
I think you better close it
And let me guide you to the purple rain

[Chorus]
Purple rain, purple rain
Purple rain, purple rain
Purple rain, purple rain
I only wanted to see you
Bathing in the purple rain

    I concur!😎

I was going to say the same thing about Daniel’s version 😊

  3. Amy says:

Hard to argue with Prince, but Daniel sure did the song justice 🙂 I, too, rarely seek out Prince though I always enjoy his music when my random iTunes fairy opts to play him.
