Here’s another Montauk Madness Round One matchup pitting a legend against a mere mortal.
Toad the Wet Sprocket is one of my favorite 90s bands and I have outsized affection for them due to the role they played in the early years of my relationship with my wife. But it takes more than that to topple The Rolling Stones, inarguably one of the greatest rock bands of all time.
Hell, the Stones deserve to move to Round Two on the strength of Keith Richards’ ‘(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction’ guitar riff alone.
I can’t get no satisfaction
I can’t get no satisfaction
Cause I try and I try and I try and I try
I can’t get no, I can’t get no
When I’m driving in my car
And that man comes on the radio
And he’s telling me more and more
About some useless information
Supposed to fire my imagination
I can’t get no – oh no, no, no!
Hey hey hey! That’s what I say!
I can’t get no satisfaction
I can’t get no satisfaction
Cause I try and I try and I try and I try
I can’t get no, I can’t get no
When I’m watching my TV
And that man comes on to tell me
How white my shirts can be
Well he can’t be a man cause he doesn’t smoke
The same cigarettes as me
I can’t get no, oh no no no
Hey hey hey, that’s what I say
I can’t get no satisfaction
I can’t get no girl reaction
Cause I try and I try and I try and I try
I can’t get no, I can’t get no
When I’m riding round the world
And I’m doing this and I’m signing that
And I’m trying to make some girl
Who tells me baby, better come back, maybe next week
Cause you see, I’m on a losing streak
I can’t get no, oh no no no
Hey hey hey! That’s what I say!
There are probably a number of artists who I would pick over the Stones, but they will get my vote here to advance to the next round.
I can’t personally say I like either of these artists. I will definitely be voting against the Stones in the next round but for now I guess they proceed simply on their legendary status that trumps any success Toad the Wet Sprocket. For many that status is well founded and there’s no denying that there is great artistry there, though I don’t particularly enjoy it.
Your lack of appreciation for The Stones disturbs me!
