Song of the Day #3,118: ‘Desperado’ – Rihanna

rihanna_anti2016 wasn’t a typical year for me, musically. Any year that sees Donald Trump elected president isn’t a typical year, period, so that’s not surprising.

When I sat down to compile my year-end 2016 best song list, I had trouble coming up with a solid top ten, let alone the 20 or so I usually offer. I didn’t buy as many new albums as usual and I was disappointed in most of the year’s Billboard hits. So rather than half-ass a best-of list I’ve decided to instead write about ten meaningful musical memories from 2016.

It was the year that critics lauded Rihanna for becoming more than a singles artist with the release of her rich, experimental album Anti. I reject that assessment because I consider both Good Girl Gone Bad and Rated R exceptional albums, but Anti is certainly her riskiest record and the one that strikes gold in many different ways.

Beyond being a great album, Anti is special to me because my enthusiasm for it was shared by both of my daughters. Our playlists don’t often overlap (increasingly, they dismiss most of my favorites as sounding “old”) but this one was a hit for all three of us.

Given the album’s explicit nature, that’s not necessarily a good thing, but you take the wins where you can get them.

[Verse 1]
Desperado
Sittin’ in an old Monte Carlo
A man whose heart is hollow
Mhm, take it easy
I’m not tryna go against yuh
Actually, I’m goin’ witcha

[Pre-Chorus]
Gotta get up out of here
And yuh ain’t leavin’ me behind
I know you won’t cause we share common interests
You need me, there ain’t no leaving me behind
Never, no, no, I just want outta here, yeah
Once I’m gone, ain’t no going back

[Chorus]
If you want, we can be runaways
Running from any sight of love
Yeah, yeah, there ain’t nothin’
There ain’t nothin’ here for me
There ain’t nothin’ here for me anymore
But I don’t wanna be alone

[Verse 2]
Desperado
Sitting on your ole’ Monte Carlo
We’ve both had our hearts broke
Unh, hunh, take it easy
I’m not tryna go against yuh
I can be a lone wolf witcha

[Pre-Chorus]
Gotta get up out of here
And you ain’t leaving me behind
I know you won’t cause we share common interests
You need me, there ain’t no leaving me behind
Never, no, no, both want outta here, yeah
Once we’re gone, ain’t no going back

[Chorus]
If you want, we can be runaways
Running from any sight of love
Yeah, yeah, there ain’t nothin’
There ain’t nothin’ here for me
There ain’t nothin’ here for me anymore
But I don’t wanna be alone

[Bridge]
Dear desperado
Yeah, I don’t wanna be alone
Dear desperado
Yeah, I don’t wanna be alone

[Chorus]
If you want, we can be runaways
Running from any sight of love
Yeah, yeah, there ain’t nothin’
There ain’t nothin’ here for me
There ain’t nothin’ here for me anymore
But I don’t wanna be alone

[Outro]
Yeah-yeah-ah
Yeah-yeah-ah
Yeah-yeah-ah
Yeah-yeah-ah
Yeah-yeah-ah
Yeah-yeah-ah

I have never been as high on Rihanna as you are, but I do like some of what I hear. This one has a nice feel.
