Song of the Day #3,068: ‘Sledgehammer’ – Peter Gabriel

peter_gabriel_soSurprisingly, I’ve never featured Peter Gabriel’s ‘Sledgehammer’ before, though I’ve blogged about four other tracks on the 9-song So album. This song was the record’s biggest hit, and Gabriel’s biggest North American hit, period.

Two other interesting bits of trivia I learned from the song’s Wikipedia page: the song ‘Sledgehammer’ replaced at #1 on the charts was ‘Invisible Touch’ by Gabriel’s former band, Genesis; and ‘Sledgehammer’ is the most-played video of all time by MTV.

I certainly remember watching this video many times as a 13-year-old boy, and it’s just as familiar 31 years later even though it’s easily been a decade since I’ve watched it (maybe longer).

So remains one hell of a great album three decades later. I’ll have to get around to posting those other four tracks one of these days.

Hey hey you
Tell me how have you been?

[Verse 1]
You could have a steam train
If you just lay down your tracks
You could have an aeroplane flying
If you bring your blue sky back

All you do is call me
I’ll be anything you need

You could have a big dipper
Going up and down, all around the bends
You could have a bumper car, bumping
This amusement never ends

I wanna be your sledgehammer
Why don’t you call my name?
Oh, let me be your sledgehammer
This will be my testimony

[Verse 2]
Show me ’round your fruit cage
Cause I will be your honey bee
Open up your fruit cage
Where the fruit is as sweet as can be

I wanna be your sledgehammer
Why don’t you call my name?
You’d better call the sledgehammer
Put your mind at rest
I’m going to be – the sledgehammer
This can be my testimony
I’m your sledgehammer
Let there be no doubt about it

Sledge sledge sledgehammer

I get it right
I kicked the habit
Shed my skin
This is the new stuff
I go dancing in (We can go dancing in)
Oh, won’t you show for me?
And I will show for you
Show for me, I will show for you
Yea, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I do mean you
Only you
You been coming through
Gonna build that power
Build, build up that power, hey
I’ve been feeding the rhythm
I’ve been feeding the rhythm
Going to feel that power, build in you
Come on, come on, help me do
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, you
I’ve been feeding the rhythm
I’ve been feeding the rhythm
It’s what we’re doing, doing
All day and night

Great song, great video and great album. This is one of the first records I recall owning on CD and boy did it sound wonderful!

Of course, your blog always teaches me something new and, this time, it’s what Gabriel is saying in the intro. I always thought it was just gibberish.
