Peter Gabriel’s ‘So’ – Track-by-Track

Most of the time, I have a primary association with an album — a moment in my life to which it returns me, or a specific emotion or thought it conjures up.

Peter Gabriel’s 1986 So is the rare album that offers multiple touch points.

For starters, tt was one of the first CDs I bought, back when the format was emerging, and an album whose sonic pleasures were ideal for the shiny new technology.

It’s also an album with songs I associate strongly with movies — namely, the iconic use of ‘In Your Eyes’ in Cameron Crowe’s Say Anything… and, lesser known, the inclusion of ‘We Do What We’re Told (Milgram’s 37)’ in Keith Gordon’s The Chocolate War.

Finally, and most important, I can’t hear ‘Mercy Street’ without recalling how my future wife and I would play it while night driving through the streets of Miami in the early 90s.

  1. ‘Red Rain’
  2. ‘Sledgehammer’
  3. ‘Don’t Give Up’
  4. ‘That Voice Again’
  5. ‘In Your Eyes’ (plus, it’s use in Say Anything…)
  6. ‘Mercy Street’
  7. ‘Big Time’
  8. ‘We Do What We’re Told (Milgram’s 37)’
  9. ‘This is the Picture (Excellent Birds)’
