Song of the Day #2,952: ‘Warning Song’ – Witness

underasunI’ve written about the band Witness, and their sophomore album Under a Sun, two times before. Once for Song of the Day #268, in April of 2009, and once for Song of the Day #1,218 in November of 2011.

Both times I referenced the only association I have with this band and this album, the fact that I bought it on the spot after hearing it play at a record store. Back when record stores were a thing, I’m sure they sold a lot of albums that way, but this is the only time I can ever remember buying a CD I’d never heard of because a clerk decided to give it a spin one afternoon.

What’s nice about those earlier posts is how they led to some interesting discussions about fate and luck and the paths our lives take. Reading some of those old threads is a reminder than this blog has often used music as a gateway to meatier topics.

I think I’ve gotten away from that in recent years, focusing more on the songs themselves, whether it’s exploring a certain year’s music, as I’m doing this month with 1980, or diving into what’s hot on the Billboard charts. I find that approach rewarding in its own right, but I might try to kickstart some of those philosophical conversations a little more often.

Handed it all over
Back to my creator
I know it appears to be worn and faded
But its hardly ever been used

I skipped a lot of lessons
The landscape passed me over
I feared a lot of wasted time
I let it all take hold and its rotted me

I need a result again
My mind has got to take shelter
From the hell coming down
The warning signs, the warning signs

No ulterior motives
And no outside interference
Order in the morning, we’re quite disciplined at night
So keep me here

It seems I’ve tipped the balance
And wired out of sequence
There’s smoke coming from the motor
Like the whole things gonna blow

So don’t you go yet
I need a result again
My mind has got to take shelter
From the hell coming down
The warning signs, the warning signs

I’ll swim in the freezing sea
While my friends still pass me
Like my list of every simple truth that I have learned
And if I can make you happy
The favour will be instantly returned

I need a result again
My mind has got to take shelter
From the hell coming down
The warning signs, the warning signs

I wonder what it is about this band Witness that draws out our nostalgia and philosophical comments? In keeping with what has inadvertently become a mini-tradition, I went back and read the previous two posts and comments (discovering that I did the exact same thing the second time).

I’m not sure exactly why we have stopped the more in depth discussions. Perhaps eight years of posts have worn us all down, and we certainly lost Amy at some point (thankfully only in cyberspace, not in reality). But I’m still here, listening and commenting daily, even if I may have run out of deep or pithy things to say. Some might argue the comments weren’t all that deep or pithy in the first place.😄
