Song of the Day #2,558: ‘Humpty Dumpty’ – Aimee Mann

lostinspaceAimee Mann, off record, seems like a perfectly happy person.

She is friends with a bunch of comedians and actors who make cameo appearances in her often hilarious videos. She hosts an annual Christmas/comedy show that bridges the gap between indie pop and vaudeville. Hell, she even had a memorable (though brief) role in The Big Lebowski.

But listening to her albums, you’d be tempted to call the suicide hotline on her behalf.

I don’t know if she’s just good at inhabiting these suffering characters or if her own life has been much darker than appearances would have you believe. Maybe a bit of both?

Of course, I love listening to her sorrowful songs even though I don’t connect to them on a visceral level based on my own experience. Maybe she’s the same way.

[Verse 1]
Say you were split, you were split in fragments
And none of the pieces would talk to you
Wouldn’t you want to be who you had been
Well baby I want that too

[Chorus]
So better take the keys and drive forever
Staying won’t put these futures back together
All the perfect drugs and superheroes
Wouldn’t be enough to bring me up to zero

[Verse 2]
Baby, you’re great, you’ve been more than patient
Saying it’s not a catastrophe
But I’m not the girl you once put your faith in
Just someone who looks like me

[Chorus]

[Verse 3]
So get out while you can
Get out while you can
Baby I’m pouring quick sand
And sinking is all I have planned
So better just go

[Chorus]

[Verse 4]
All the king’s horses and all the king’s men
Couldn’t put baby together again
All the king’s horses and all the king’s men
Couldn’t put baby together again

  1. Dana says:

Perhaps she draws from an earlier time in her life for melancholy inspiration?
