Song of the Day #2,465: ‘Shake Sugaree’ – Rhiannon Giddens

rhiannon_giddensIt’s not every day that I get a music recommendation from my parents.

Certainly, my exposure to some of the greats — Frank Sinatra, Bob Dylan, Carly Simon, Carole King — is thanks to their influence when I was a kid. And my mother famously introduced our family to Billy Joel (or, as she referred to him, Billy Joe).

But since I turned 15, I can probably count on one hand the number of musical artists they’ve sent my way. I might not even need the one hand.

So I was intrigued when my mother sent me an email asking if I’d heard of Rhiannon Giddens. Because I hadn’t.

Giddens is a classically trained singer and musician who fronted a folk band called the Carolina Chocolate Drops before releasing her solo debut, this year’s Tomorrow is My Turn.

Giddens’ forte is the sort of rootsy folk music usually associated with T-Bone Burnett, and indeed he serves as producer on the record, which features covers of traditional songs written and/or popularized by women.

This is a great sound, and Giddens has a lovely voice. I can see why my mother was impressed, and I look forward to her next recommendation, 25 years from now.

[Verse 1]
Have a little song, won’t take long
Sing it right, once or twice
Oh Lordy me, didn’t I shake sugaree?
Everything I got is done and pawned
Everything I got is done and pawned

[Verse 2]
Pawn my watch, pawn my chain
Pawn everything that was in my name
Oh Lordy me, didn’t I shake sugaree?
Everything I got is done and pawned
Everything I got is done and pawned

[Verse 3]
Pawn my chair, pawn my bed
Ain’t got nowhere to lay my head
Oh Lordy me, didn’t I shake sugaree?
Everything I got is done and pawned
Everything I got is done and pawned

[Verse 4]
Pawn my tobacco, pawn my bike
Pawn everything that was in my sight
Oh Lordy me, didn’t I shake sugaree?
Everything I got is done and pawned
Everything I got is done and pawned

[Chorus] x2
Have a little secret, ain’t gonna tell
I’m goin’ to Heaven in a brown pea shell
Oh Lordy me, didn’t I shake sugaree?
Everything I got is done and pawned
Everything I got is done and pawned
