Song of the Day #2,450: ‘Small Poppies’ – Courtney Barnett

courtney_barnett_sometimesMy first listen to Courtney Barnett’s Sometimes I Sit and Think, Sometimes I Just Sit has been rewarding so far. And now we arrive at a 7-minute track called ‘Small Poppies.’

Few songs are worthy of a 7-minute running time. Even ‘Hey Jude’ is about three minutes too long. And ironically, this seems to be the least wordy track on the album so far. Will Barnett earn those minutes with this track? Let’s find out…

Ooh, a few seconds in and I like it already. This one is definitely a departure. Very bluesy. Great guitar work.

I’m loving this right through the 4 1/2-minute mark. So what’s in store for the next three minutes? Seems like maybe more of this electric guitar, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Well, that didn’t feel like 7 minutes, which is one of the highest compliments I can pay to a 7-minute song. ‘Small Poppies’ is my favorite song on this album so far.

[Verse 1]
I stare at the lawn, it’s Wednesday morning
It needs a cut but I leave it growing
All different sizes and all shades of green
Slashing it down just seems kind of mean
In a way it’s a shame you get away
Thinking it’s just a game
Who am I to deny myself a pawn for you to use?
At the end of the day it’s a pain that I keep seeing your name
But I’m sure it’s a bore being you

[Chorus]
I don’t know quite who I am, oh but man I am trying
I make mistakes until I get it right
An eye for an eye for an eye for an eye for an eye
I don’t agree with that, why can’t we just talk nice?

[Verse 2]
Oh! The calamity, I wanna go to sleep for an eternity
Who am I to deny myself a pawn?
Oh! The humanity I wanna disappear into obscurity
But I’m sure it’s a bore being you

[Chorus]
I don’t know quite who I am, oh but man I am trying
I make mistakes until I get it right
An eye for an eye for an eye for an eye for an eye
I used to hate myself but now I think I’m alright

[Chorus]
I don’t know quite who I am, oh but man I am trying
I make mistakes until I get it right
An eye for an eye for an eye for an eye for an eye
I dreamed I stabbed you with a coat hanger wire

I agree this is a nice change up. I might have cut out the second guitar solo (the harder edged one) to bring this in a minute or so less.
