I’ve gone in to a couple of my track-by-track deep dives having never heard the album, but this was the first one I went into with almost zero familiarity with the artist.
I had read a lot of praise about Australian singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett, which made her 2015 studio debut a respectable choice for my first ever “going in cold” experiment. The album’s cheeky title suggested I’d be charmed by Barnett’s wit, if not her music.
Turns out I was quite charmed by both. This is a smart, funny, and often poignant album that warmly illuminates Barnett’s worldview while serving up some truly catchy indie pop.
