Song of the Day #2,456: ‘Nobody Really Cares if You Don’t Go to the Party’ – Courtney Barnett

courtney_barnett_sometimesI love the title of this songs, track #8 of Courtney Barnett’s new album: ‘Nobody Really Cares if You Don’t Go to the Party.’ It doesn’t show up in the song but it conveys the theme beautifully.

This song contrasts two different philosophies — the devil-may-care attitude of one character vs. the sheltered introversion of the narrator. The title refers to both people, suggesting that neither of their outlooks is important in the grand scheme.

This isn’t a screed. The singer prefers her way of life but doesn’t judge that of her friend. The final line of the first verse cleverly has it both ways: ‘That’s not a bad way to go’ could refer both to dying in one’s sleep or adopting the “I’ll sleep when I’m dead” credo.

I’m enjoying the music on Barnett’s album, but it’s the lyrics that really impress me. All of these songs have been just as enjoyable to read as listen to — sometimes more so.

[Verse 1]
You always get what you want
And you don’t even try
Your friends hate it when it’s always going your way
But I’m glad that you’ve got luck on your side
You’re saying definitely maybe
I’m saying probably no
You say “You sleep when you’re dead,” I’m scared I’ll die in my sleep
I guess that’s not a bad way to go

[Chorus]
I wanna go out but I wanna stay home
I wanna go out but I wanna stay home

[Verse 2]
Why are you so eager to please?
I wear my heart on my sleeve
Gets harder in the winter, gotta be a fake or shiver
It takes a great deal out of me
Yes I like hearing your stories
But I’ve heard them all before
I’d rather stay in bed with the rain over my head
Than have to pick my brain up off of the floor

[Chorus]
