‘Fucked My Way Up to the Top’ – Lana Del Rey
2014 was the year I suddenly understood Lana Del Rey. I had observed her from afar, largely through the prism of controversy (the ridiculed SNL performance, attacks over her “invented” persona), but I’d never taken the time to listen to her music.
When her new album, Ultraviolence, was released to lavish critical acclaim, I figured it was time to dive in. And what I discovered ā both on that record and her debut, Born to Die ā is a complex, challenging performer with razor-sharp artistic instincts.
Ultraviolence has a Bond-theme elegance, eroticism and romanticism from start to finish. It’s a moody masterpiece.
And I love how Del Rey embraces the criticisms leveled at her. Today’s SOTD throws all the misogynist, slut-shaming insults she’s absorbed back into her haters’ faces not by promising to shake it off, but by ironically owning up to it.
Reading the YouTube comments on this clip, it’s clear that most of her half-witted critics don’t get the joke.
The track is also a shot at an unnamed artist who Del Rey says criticized her publicly and then copied her style. The safe money is on Lorde as her intended target ā Lorde ripped Del Rey’s first album as superficial (missing the irony herself) and then released an album that sounds very much like Born to Die.
Life is awesome, I confess
What I do, I do best
You got nothing, I got tested
And I’m best, yes
[Pre-Chorus 1]
Lay me down tonight in my linen and curls
Lay me down tonight, Riviera girls
[Chorus]
I fucked my way up to the top
This is my show
I fucked my way up to the top
Go baby, go
This is my show
Go
This is my show
[Verse 2]
I’m a dragon, you’re a whore
Don’t even know what you’re good for
Mimicking me is a fucking bore
To me, but babe
[Pre-Chorus 2]
Lay me down tonight in my diamonds and pearls
Tell me something nice about your favorite girl
[Chorus]
[Bridge]
Need you baby, like I breathe you, baby
Need you baby, more, more, more, more
Need you baby, like I breathe you, baby
Fuckin’ need you baby, more, more, more, more
[Pre-Chorus 3]
Lay me down tonight in my linen and pearls
Lay me down tonight, I’m your favorite girl
[Chorus]
[Bridge]
It’s funny, because Lorde was on my radar screen first, I always felt Lana Del Ray was ripping Lorde off, not the other way around.
Really? I mean Really? this is not a song, sorry to sound like an old fart but really?
Oh, Peg, it’s a song. You just can’t get past the lyrics:)
