Song of the Day #1,894: ‘Ready to Start’ – Tears For Fears

tears_for_fearsTears For Fears has released one album in the past 18 years, and that was nine years ago. Now the band is back in the studio working on a new record, so I guess the ‘once every nine years’ pattern is working for them.

This is actually a great time for new Tears For Fears music, assuming it’s as good, and in the same style, as their 80s hits. Today’s pop music is very much influenced by the 80s and I can imagine songs like ‘Shout’ and ‘Everybody Wants to Rule the World’ succeeding wildly were they released in 2013.

Indeed, Tears For Fears’ music has been sampled over the years, as they point out in this message they released along with today’s SOTD, a cover of Arcade Fire’s ‘Ready to Start’:

Having appreciated artists like Kanye West, Katy Perry, Kimbra, Nas, Gary Jules/Michael Andrews, Adam Lambert & Dizzee Rascal covering & sampling our songs over the past years, we agreed that some reciprocal cross-generational love was in order. We decided to give Arcade Fire a twist of TFF. Enjoy.

Original lyrics:

If the businessmen drink my blood
Like the kids at art school said they would
The I guess I’ll just begin again.
You say, can we still be friends?
If I was scared, I would,
And if I was bored, you know I would,
And if I was yours, but I’m not.

All the kids have always known
That the emperor wears no clothes
But they bow down to him anyway
’cause it’s better then being alone.

If I was scared, I would,
and if I was bored, you know I would,
And if I was yours, but I’m not.

Now you’re knocking at my door
Saying: “Please come out with us tonight”
But I would rather be alone,
then pretend I feel alright.

If the businessmen drink my blood
Like the kids at art school said they would
The I guess I’ll just begin again.
You say, can we still be friends?

If I was scared, I would,
And if I was pure, you know I would,
And if I was yours, but I’m not.
Now I’m ready to start.

If I was scared, I would,
And if I was pure, you know I would,
And if I was yours, but I’m not.
Now I’m ready to start.

Now I’m ready to start,
I would rather be wrong than
Live in the shadows of your song.
My mind is open wide and
Now I’m ready to start.
My mind is open wide
And now I’m ready to start.

You’re not sure
You opened the door
and step out into the dark.
Now I’m ready.

  1. Dana says:

I had no idea Tears for Fears had recorded anything since the 80’s. was their album from nine years ago any good?

Back in the day, I really liked their stuff. Their music somehow worked for me even though I often don’t care for British/Euro electronic pop.

I will be curious to hear new material from them.

  2. Clay says:

I’ve never heard it, but AllMusic gives it four out of five stars and writes, “lovers of intricately arranged and artfully executed pop music will find themselves delightfully consumed by another chapter from this enigmatic group.”
