Song of the Day #1,112: ‘Hillbilly Bone’ – Blake Shelton

Ah, Blake Shelton… the cute, mischievous southern gentleman who charmed the socks off of everybody who got within 100 yards of The Voice. As talented as Dia Frampton is, I have no doubt that she made it to second place in large part because Shelton was her coach.

Prior to the show, I knew Blake Shelton primarily as Miranda Lambert’s boyfriend (and then husband). And liking her as much as I do, I knew any man worthy of her would have to be pretty special. I’d also seen him co-host a country awards show in his typical charming fashion.

There was also the video for ‘Hillbilly Bone,’ his duet with Trace Adkins that reached #1 on the country charts. I’m not a big fan of the Blake Shelton music I’ve heard (perhaps putting a dent in my theory that liking country music is tied to liking the person performing it) but I liked this one right off the bat. Shelton doesn’t write most of his music (and perhaps that’s the amendment to my initial theory) but he certainly makes this one his own.

Here we go
Yeah
Ha-ha-ha-ha
Aw man you gotta watch where
you’re sniffin’ around here

Yeah I got a friend in New York City
He’s never heard of Conway Twitty
Don’t know nothin’ ’bout grits and greens
Never been south of Queens
But he flew down here on a business trip
I took him honky tonkin’ and that was it
He took to it like a pig to mud, like a cow to cud

We all got a hillbilly bone down deep inside
No matter where you from you just can’t hide it
When the band starts bangin’ and the fiddle saws
You can’t help but hollerin’, Yee Haw!
When you see them pretty little country queens
Man you gotta admit that in them genes
Ain’t nothin’ wrong, just gettin’ on
Your hillbilly bone-ba-bone-ba-bone-bone

Ah, preach about hillbilly to ’em Blake
Ah listen to this

Nah, you ain’t gotta be born out in the sticks
With a F-150 and a 30-06,
Or have a Bubba in the family tree
To get on down with me
Yea Bubba all you need is an open mind
If it fires you up you gotta let it shine
When it feels so right that it can’t be wrong
Come on, come on, come on
You ain’t alone, you ain’t alone

We all got a hillbilly bone down deep inside
No matter where you from you just can’t hide it
When the band starts bangin’ and the fiddle saws
You can’t help but hollerin’, Yee Haw!
When you see them pretty little country queens
Man you gotta admit that in them genes
Ain’t nothin’ wrong, just gettin’ on
Your hillbilly bone-ba-bone-ba-bone-bone

Com’ on ya all

We all got a hillbilly bone down deep inside
No matter where you from you just can’t hide it
When the band starts bangin’ and the fiddle saws
You can’t help but hollerin’, Yee Haw!
When you see them pretty little country queens
Man you gotta admit that in them genes
Ain’t nothin’ wrong, just gettin’ on
Your hillbilly bone-ba-bone-ba-bone-bone
Hillbilly bone-ba-bone-ba-bone-bone

At some point during the Voice season, I had to finally concede to my family that I had a man-crush on Blake. That crush, however, doesn’t extend to his music so much.

Crush aside, I think that is one catchy song, and I love the video. “When the fiddle saws” – what a great line 🙂 We were just debating the difference between a fiddle and a violin the other day. When I googled it, I came across something that said, “a violin sings, and a fiddle dances.” I liked that, but I like this even more. Of course, I was a bit disturbed by what Trace Adkins seemed to repeatedly be suggesting was his “Hillbilly bone.” Otherwise, a very charming video 🙂
