Song of the Day #1,049: ‘I Miss You’ – Randy Newman

Five years after Trouble in Paradise, Randy Newman released 1988’s Land of Dreams, another album I inexplicably don’t own. That one wasn’t as universally acclaimed as his 70s work but I’m sure it’s worth a listen. And following Land of Dreams, Newman went silent.

Well, maybe that’s not the way to put it. The man wrote scores and songs for 12 feature films over the next 11 years, including his celebrated work on The Natural, Avalon and the first two Toy Story films. But he didn’t record another album of his own songs until 1999, when he released Bad Love.

It was refreshing to hear a new Randy Newman album after all those years. Bad Love was, in fact, the first new Randy Newman album I’d ever heard. The rest I’d picked up well after their release dates. So it was nice to discover this one along with the rest of the world.

And it showed him to be in fine form, packing his acerbic wit and rascal charm into the brand of New Orleans jazz and blues he’s made his specialty.

Because this is the week for the sentimental songs, I’m featuring ‘I Miss You,’ a real tearjerker Newman wrote for his ex-wife. I don’t know if he’d remarried when he wrote this, but if so I imagine the new wife wasn’t very happy.

Still in my heart
After all these years
Separated by time
And now by distance

I couldn’t allow
Myself to feel
The loss that I feel right now
As I put this song down

You’re far away
And happy I know
It’s a little bit late
Twenty years or so

It’s a little bit cold
For all those concerned
But I’d sell my soul, and your soul
For a song
So I’ll pour my heart out

I miss you
I miss you
I miss you
I’m sorry but I do
I miss you
I miss you
I miss you
I’m sorry but it’s true

I want to thank you
For the good years
And apologize for the rough ones

You must be laughing yourself sick
Up there in Idaho
But I wanted to write you one
Before I quit
And this one’s it

I miss you
I miss you
I wanted you to know
I miss you
I miss you
I miss you
And I still love you so

Wow, that’s one heart breaking song.

Land of Dreams, huh? Another one I have to pick up as well.

As I alluded to earlier, I fiind Bad Love to be amongst the best stuff Nemwan has done and, as Peg noted, this song is a heartbreaker.

Not only was Newman remarried when he wrote this song (which I also love), but it is to the receptionist in his office building, with whom he had an affair during his first marriage
