Song of the Day #161: ‘Feels Like Home’ – Randy Newman

randynewmanGoing back to yesterday’s thought on simplicity ruling when it comes to love songs, here’s a fabulous love song by Randy Newman, a songwriter known more for caustic irony than wearing his heart on his sleeve. And that’s one reason this song works so well.

The theme here is similar to that of Billy Joel’s early tune ‘You’re My Home’ — the idea that “home” has more to do with the who than the where. I guess it’s a pretty obvious sentiment, but still a sweet one.

What I like most about this song is the world-weariness of it, in both the lyrics and the delivery. Sung by an older man like Newman, the line “if you knew how lonely my life has been and how low I’ve felt so long” is very powerful. I can’t really identify, of course, because my loneliness lasted all of 19 years before I met my future wife.

But she certainly feels like home to me.

Something in your eyes
Makes me wanna lose myself
Makes me wanna lose myself
In your arms.

There’s something in your voice
Makes my heart beat fast
Hope this feeling lasts
The rest of my life.

If you knew how lonely my life has been
And how low I’ve felt so long.
If you knew how I wanted someone to come along
And change my life the way you’ve done.

Feels like home to me
Feels like home to me
Feels like I’m on my way back
Where I come from.

Feels like home to me
Feels like home to me
Feels like I’m on my way back
Where I belong.

A window breaks
Down a long dark street
And a siren wails in the night.
But I’m all right
‘Cause I have you here with me
And I can almost see
Through the dark there’s light.

If you knew how much this moment means to me
And how long I’ve waited for your touch.
If you knew how happy you are making me.
I never thought I’d love anyone so much.

Feels like home to me
Feels like home to me
Feels like I’m on my way back to where I come from.

Feels like home to me
Feels like home to me
Feels like I’m on my way back where I belong.
Feels like I’m on my way back where I belong.

Well, now we are talking! Great song by a great artist.

And I’m truly sorry that you were such a lonely 5 year old:)

I think my love, which borders on obsession, for this song is known by the frequent visitors to this blog. As I said in my own blog entry on it back in September, the time I spend listening to this song feels like a respite from everything around me. The kids humor me by letting me listen to it in the car at least a couple of times each week.

While this song is certainly a love song (just see how many love stories have been set to it over on YouTube), it also strikes me as being about any of the connections between people that bring meaning to our lives. “And I can almost see through the dark there’s light” is just an achingly beautiful line, for both the hope that it suggests and the tentative and fleeting nature of that optimism.

A breathtaking song, this one easily sits at the top of my favorites of the year, and will likely remain one of my all-time favorite songs years from now.
