Song of the Day #131: ‘She Said She Said’ – The Beatles

revolverFollowing the remarkable artistic success of Rubber Soul, The Beatles put the pedal to the metal and delivered what many consider their finest album, Revolver. This album was voted the best album of all time in a recent VH-1 survey of hundreds of critics and musicians, and it’s easy to see why. Revolver is a perfect blend of the pop-rock mastery of the band’s early work and the studio trickery they would indulge in more on future albums.

It also contains such classic tunes as ‘Here, There and Everywhere,’ ‘Eleanor Rigby,’ ‘Good Day Sunshine’ and ‘Got to Get You Into My Life,’ not to mention a host of lesser-known gems.

For today’s song, I’ve chosen to highlight ‘She Said She Said’ for a couple of reasons. First, it’s just a great song… a splendid mix of guitar, drums and vocals. But second, it’s the song I consider a litmus test that separates true Beatles fans from casual Beatles fans.

Simple question: To whom does the “she” in ‘She Said She Said’ refer? A casual Beatles fan most likely doesn’t know the answer off the top of her head. She might venture a guess and go with “Cynthia Lennon” or “Yoko Ono.” A true Beatles fan would know immediately that the answer is “Peter Fonda.”

Well, I confess that I didn’t know this was about Peter Fonda, though I consider myself a pretty big Beatles fan.

I agree that Revolver is an excellent album, but Rubber Soul remains my favorite.

Well, I clearly am a very casual fan, as I had no idea that Peter Fonda was the “she” in the song, nor do I begin to understand what this reference means. So… I’ll relish in my casual fan status and enjoy the “classic tunes” everyone knows. That, or I’ll steal Maddie’s awesome new Beatles bible and cram in time for the next installment in this increasingly tricky series. 😛

well for me rubber soul is the best
