Throwing back to the week of August 16, 1975, we find the Bee Gees atop the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Jive Talkin’.’ It was the band’s first #1 hit (and first in the top ten) since 1971’s ‘How Can You Mend a Broken Heart.’ They would have seven more over the next four years.
This was the lead single of the album Main Course, the Bee Gees’ first gold album in the U.S. and the start of a massively successful run that made them one of the top-selling acts in history.
Throwing back to the week of August 2, 1975, we find the Eagles atop the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘One of These Nights,’ title track of the band’s breakthrough fourth album.
At #2, where it stayed for three weeks, was ‘I’n Not in Love,’ the ethereal ballad by English art-pop band 10cc. This was one of two top five U.S. singles for 10cc, the other being the very different ‘The Things We Do For Love,’ released the following year.
The week of July 19, 1975, found Wings atop the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Listen to What the Man Said,’ the leadoff single from the album Venus and Mars. This was the third of five #1 hits by Wings during the 70s.
This is the song I know least of those five, which include ‘My Love,’ ‘Silly Love Songs,’ ‘Band on the Run,’ and ‘With a Little Luck.’ I’m sure I’ve heard this before but it doesn’t exactly ring a bell.
Throwing back to the week of July 5, 1975, we find Van McCoy and The Soul City Symphony atop the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘The Hustle,’ an instrumental disco track by Van McCoy & The Soul City Symphony. McCoy was a prolific songwriter and producer, with more than 700 credits to his name (most recorded by other people), but this is his best-known release.
‘The Hustle’ is one of only 25 instrumental tracks to top the Hot 100. Despite the repeated chants of “Do it!” and “Do the hustle!,” this is considered an instrumental because the main melody comes courtesy of something other than the vocals.
Throwing back to the week of June 21, 1975, we find the husband and wife duo Captain & Tennille atop the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Love Will Keep Us Together,’ their debut single.
The track is a faithful cover of a Neil Sedaka song released a couple of years earlier. Toni Tennille gives a nod to Sedaka in the final seconds, singing “Sedaka is back” over the fade-out.
