Throwing back to the week of December 6, 1975, we find German disco trio Silver Convention atop the Billboard Hot 100 with their biggest hit, ‘Fly, Robin, Fly.’
This song held the #1 spot for three weeks, and was both preceded and followed by KC & the Sunshine Band’s ‘That’s the Way (I Like It).‘ It was a good time to be a disco fan.
Throwing back to the week of November 22, 1975, we find KC & the Sunshine Band atop the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘That’s the Way (I Like It),’ the second single from their self-titled sophomore album.
The first single, ‘Get Down Tonight,’ also reached #1 on the chart. These were the first of five eventual #1 hits for the band. ‘That’s the Way (I Like It)’ has the distinction of hitting #1 twice within the same month, as it was briefly replaced by Silver Convention’s ‘Fly Robin Fly’ after topping the charts the first time.
Throwing back to the week of November 8, 1975, we find Elton John atop the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Island Girl,’ the first single from his album Rock of the Westies.
This song has the distinction of being the only one of John’s nine U.S. #1 hits that I’ve never heard. Or at least I have no recollection of hearing it before learning it would be the subject of a Throwback Weekend post today.
Throwing back to the week of October 25, 1975, we find Neil Sedaka and John Denver holding on to the top two spots of the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Bad Blood‘ and ‘I’m Sorry,’ respectively.
At #3, where it peaked, was Jefferson Starship’s ‘Miracles,’ a soft rock song inspired by the teachings of an Indian guru. The album version of the song ran nearly seven minutes and was trimmed to half that length for radio play (conveniently omitting the lyric “I had a taste of the real world when I went down on you, girl”).
Throwing back to the week of October 11, 1975, we find Neil Sedaka atop the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Bad Blood,’ a song I’m certain I’ve never heard before.
This was Sedaka’s third #1 hit, following 1962’s ‘Breaking Up is Hard to Do’ and 1974’s ‘Laughter in the Rain.’ This song remained at #1 for three weeks, becoming the biggest hit of the singer-songwriter’s career.
