Continuing my personal ranking of the 25 movie musicals deemed essential by the American Film Institute…
#15. The Wizard of Oz – 1939
(#3 on the AFI list)
The Wizard of Oz is probably the most famous and beloved film on this list, a classic family entertainment that has been watched and treasured by multiple generations.
Watching it for what must have been the first time all the way through since I was a child, its most famous scenes felt instantly familiar. In fact, it was difficult to appreciate it as a cohesive movie rather than a collection of classic pop culture moments.
I suppose every self-respecting gay singer must tackle ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ at some point.
Rufus Wainwright took it a step further, actually recreating Judy Garland’s legendary Carnegie Hall concert song for song in his own appearance at the venue.
Today’s recording is not from that concert but from a bootleg of a more traditional concert.
